Confusion Regarding Parsers and Third Party Applications For FFXIV Player

Today, a reddit thread sprung up that states"Square Enix is banning and/or issuing warnings for the use of FFXIV-APP."An image was included, that has since been taken down which includes a discussion between a GM and a player regarding the parser program used by many players in the Final Fantasy XIV community.

Specifically, the GM states "Parsing is a function relegated to third-party software" and that "Use and advocation of third-party software is a serious violation".

...or is it?

In November, community rep Hvinire made this post regarding tunneling software:

The type of software you are describing in this thread doesn't appear to directly control anything for the FFXIV client, and as such isn't breaking any of the rules. Similar to other programs, 3rd party software is used at your own risk, and we recommend you employ your best judgement when running software not mentioned in the user agreement.

So, if a program does not "directly control" anything within the client, it's OK?

At the same time, you have GMs and Agents on the online support stating that all third-party tools are against the rules. Now today, we have word that at least one person has received a 72 hour suspension warning on their account because they were talking about using FFXIV-APP in game.

So which is it Square Enix?

We've reached out to Square Enix for comment and will update this post should we hear something.
