Final Fantasy XIV has been around for more than ten years, and the game has received a ton of new content during this timeline. However, one thing that has stayed the same throughout this time was its graphics or visuals. Even though the industry has moved on a couple of generations, the famous MMO still hasn't received a major graphics overhaul.
However, developers revealed that the game would eventually get a graphics update when they announced their 10-year road map. And this update will most likely come out with what Square Enix has planned for 2023. Finally, more than a year after the initial announcement, fans have finally gotten new information regarding this upcoming graphics overhaul. What is Changing?
Fans first saw how the graphical update would look when it was announced in early 2022 Live Letter. The developers shared a few samples of enhanced character models featuring significant improvements, such as better high-res textures and shaders. While these were samples from the first month of testing, the end product might look completely different. Not only will the graphical update affect the characters, but it will also include higher resolution textures for gear, better shaders to imitate materials such as metal, cloth, and leather, as well as overall improved lighting.
And at the recent PAX East 2023 event, the Director and Producer, Naoki Yoshida, brought up the graphics update set to arrive in 7.0. He mentioned that the upcoming graphics update is the most exciting project the developers are working on and how the team recently reviewed it midway. Furthermore, he explained how they are also working on other elements that are not just the immediate aesthetical aspects of the update.
When Can You Expect the Update to Come?
The graphics overhaul sets to first roll out with Patch 7.0. However, not all of the planned changes will immediately come out with patch 7.0 but will roll out gradually with the 7. x patches. However, an exact date for patch 7.0 has yet to reveal. Patch 7.0 will be a brand new expansion to the game, and since the current expansion Endwalker has almost come to an end, fans can make an educated guess as to when the update might roll out. Fans can expect this highly anticipated update to come out somewhere in late 2023 or early 2024.
They might reveal more information about the graphics update during the Fan Festival in Las Vegas on July 28-29, 2023. Many players have expressed concerns about whether their gaming devices can handle the improved graphics. However, since the developers plan to continue supporting the PS4, most players should not worry. Overall, the upcoming update generates excitement among FFXIV fans, and it will be interesting to see what new features and improvements it will bring to the game.
