Arena Changes

The user interfaces in WotLK is unrecognizable for those who have played the original WotLK, as the icons and banners change based on a player’s rating. In WotLK Classic, the team’s name is replaced with your position on the bracket. The icons and banners mentioned before reflect your rating and ranking for the season. However, only top-ranked players can see their ranking.

Since teams no longer exist, the process for putting together a good arena comp in Wrath Classic. You can play with anyone in your realm if they are part of your faction. All groups need to do is visit an Arena battle master and select the Arena size they wish to compete in.

If a player is not violating Blizzard’s EULA, a player’s position on the Arena ladder is based on their personal rating. According to Kaivax, a community manager on the World of Warcraft forum, the end-of-season awards adhere to the following structure:

Rank 1: End a PvP season in the top 0.1% of the Arena ladder.

Gladiator: End a PvP season in the top 0.5% of the Arena ladder.

Duelist: End a PvP season in the top 3% of the Arena ladder.

Rival: End a PvP season in the top 10% of the Arena ladder.

Challenger: End a PvP season in the top 35% of the Arena ladder.

Now that you are familiar with the changes to Arena gameplay, it is time to take a look at the best arena comps for WoW Classic WotLK. However, simply putting a comp together does not mean you will win. You will need to ensure you have a healthy amount of WoW WotLK Classic gold to get the gear needed to optimize your performance in PvP gameplay.

Best Arena Comps List

Whether you are playing a 2v2 or 3v3, this list of WotLK classic arena comps should satisfy anyone’s gameplay style. This list will give players an idea of the team comps that work well in WoW WotLK.

Burst Damage Comp (3v3 Comp)

The burst damage comp will have players doing insane numbers in short bursts. However, survivability is key in the burst damage comp. The structure for the burst damage comp in WotLK includes:

Fire Mage

Elemental Shaman

Shadow Priest

Wrath of the Lich King did nothing but good for the Fire Mage. Before WotLK, Fire Mage was always pushed to the side in PVP in exchange for Frost Mages. Fortunately, Fire Mages brought crowd control and burst damage to the PVP table now. The biggest point with fire mage is their burst damage in this comp. The Fire Mage will bring the biggest numbers to this comp, so survivability is key.

For survivability to work, players will need to include an Elemental Shaman. An Elemental Shaman geared with enough gold brings high-burst damage and quick healing. During a coordinated burst damage phase, the Fire Mage and Elemental Shaman will blow enemies away in an instant. However, since both are basically glass cannons, the fast rate of healing will keep both on the battlefield during sticky situations.

In WotLK, the Shadow Priest received plenty of utility, as well as other buffs. Shadow Priests are also glass cannons, but their damage (with most of their talents in the Shadow tree) will show some impressive numbers in a burst damage comp. The Shadow Priest does not work well with a lot of compositions in Arena, but with a burst damage comp, you will see them work really well in instant burst damage situations. The Shadow Priest and Elemental Shamans take a lot of skill to play, so the burst damage comp is not a great starter comp on the list of WoW WotLK Classic Best Arena Comps. However, once players reach a point in WoW where they consider themselves highly skilled, then putting together a burst damage comp will devastate opponents in Arena gameplay.

High Utility Comp (2v2)

If you truly want to drive your opponents into a loss with a slow and methodical approach to player-versus-player content, then bring two classes that have plenty of PVP utility: Retribution Paladin and Shadow Priest.

We already mentioned the buffs that Shadow Priest received earlier with Wrath of the Lich King. Not needing to manage dots is easier now that there is talent available to refresh them instantly. Being able to disarm the target helps in both defensive and offensive situations. You also will not have to worry about mana management too much. We say “too much” because it is still essential to manage mana but getting mana back with Shadow Priests during PVP is not difficult. There is a lot of room for error. In some situations, it helps that the Shadow Priest can get tanky when it needs to be. Shadow Priest is still a glass cannon in most situations, but players do have Dispersion that reduces damage taken by almost 100%, even during CC, when it is absolutely needed.

In player-versus-player content, Retribution Paladins want to make sure they are focused on Resilience. Resilience does a number of things reduces the amount of mana drained, reduces damage from critical hits, and basically reduces damage overall. The Retribution Paladin in PVP will frustrate enemy players with how tanky and resilient they are. Not only are Retribution Paladins tough to bring down, but they have decent AOE damage and as much utility as the Shadow Priest. Having access to two different sacrifices will annoy enemies as the Retribution Paladin can break themselves and their teammates out of crowd control situations. Do not count on the Retribution Paladin pumping out as much damage as the Shadow Priest, but on the list of WoW WotLK Classic Best Arena Comps, this duo will be hard to bring down.

Single Damage Comp (2v2 or 3v3)

When you think of single damage, you think of three classes:

Arms Warrior (2v2 with Holy Paladin)

Holy Paladin (2v2 with Arms Warrior)

Unholy Death Knight (3v3 with Arms Warrior and Holy Paladin)

For single targets, you will not find a better WoW WotLK Classic Arena comp than the combination of Arms Warrior, Holy Paladin, and Death Knight. This trio puts focus on single target damage and has been a staple of compositions since the original Wrath of the Lich King. This combination offers three plate wearers that not only pump out serious single-target damage but offer plenty of utility as well.

The only difficulty in this composition would be the player covering the Arms Warrior. An Arms Warrior is difficult to master. The player on Arms Warrior would need a quick reaction time and precise utilization of macros. However, highly skilled players who master Arms Warrior deal unbelievable single-target damage. Unfortunately, the only downside to an Arms Warrior is the fact that they are glass cannons. The Arms Warrior will need focused healing when encountering more than one target at a time, but they do have utility for situations where they do not have access to immediate healing.

Between The Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King Classic, the Holy Paladin has received plenty of buffs, which makes it a perfect starter class for player-versus-player scenarios. A low-skilled Holy Paladin can hold their own alongside a highly skilled Arms Warrior. The Holy Paladin can not only heal themselves, but they can heal their teammates as well. They not only have strong healing, but they have and shields for days that can keep their allies in battle. The damage potential with an Arms Warrior and a Paladin in the same comp is staggering.

Now, imagine throwing in the hybrid playability of Unholy Death Knight into that duo to make this combination one of the best WoW WotLK Classic Arena comps in the game. The Unholy Death Knight not only brings survivability, but they bring a lot of utility as well. Wrath of the Lich King introduced the Death Knight to bring a class that casts spells as hard as it swings. The crowd control and powerful single-target damage bring nothing but madness and mechanics to the single-target damage comp.

Of course, playing the class for each composition is not enough. You will need to ensure you have enough WoW WotLK gold. MmoGah.com has the currency you need for WotLK and other games to keep you geared and ready to tackle the hardest content in any game.
