Crafting a Runeword in Diablo 4 Season 15 starts with more than collecting a rare rune. You need the right base item, the correct ingredients, and a plan for anything missing from your inventory.

This guide focuses on Legacy Runeword equipment, including practical recipes, rune acquisition, and Horadric Cube upgrades. The goal is to help you complete a useful item without spending materials you still need for another step. It assumes you already have access to the Horadric Cube.

Legacy Runewords are named equipment items, such as Stealth and Enigma, created by combining specific runes with a compatible white base item in the Horadric Cube.

Before collecting ingredients, choose an item that addresses a specific need. Check its equipment slot, bonuses, and compatibility with your character. Being able to craft a Runeword is not, by itself, a reason to replace your current equipment.

Prepare the Correct Base Item

Every Legacy Runeword requires a Common, or white, base item of a supported equipment type. Ancestral bases are optional, not a universal requirement for making the recipe work.

Separate an early upgrade from a long-term investment. For an early Stealth, you do not need to postpone crafting until you find an Ancestral base. When spending high-tier runes on equipment you intend to keep, take more care over your base selection.

Check your Loot Filter before searching for materials: a rule that hides white equipment can also hide the base you need. Keep the relevant equipment type visible while farming.

Add the Ingredients and Transmute

Place the compatible white base and the required runes into the Horadric Cube, then select Transmute to create the Runeword.

Before confirming, compare every ingredient with your chosen recipe. Check the exact rune names and equipment type rather than relying on similar-looking icons.

A successful craft does not guarantee a Greater Affix. Treat repeated crafting for Greater Affixes as a separate investment rather than part of the minimum cost of obtaining your first usable Runeword.

These four examples cover chest armor, a helm, and several weapon or offhand options. Each requires a compatible white base item. The Spirit entry lists examples rather than every supported base.

Stealth provides a straightforward first crafting example: it requires just two runes, Tal and Eth, plus a compatible white chest item. Lore offers another compact recipe when you are evaluating a helm replacement.

For Spirit, confirm that your character can equip the particular weapon or offhand you plan to use. Do not collect materials first and leave that decision until the final craft.

Enigma makes a useful longer-term planning example. Its recipe involves both Jah and Ber, so creating one missing ingredient can accidentally consume another ingredient needed for the finished item. Keep the final recipe visible while planning intermediate upgrades.

These are recipe examples, not a universal priority list. Compare the resulting item with your actual build before committing resources.

Include Legacy Rune Sources in Your Farming

Mobalytics’ Season 15 Runeword crafting guide lists the Countess as a source of Legacy Runes and notes that runes also appear as world drops. Once you have access to the encounter, consider it when building your supply of crafting materials.

Do not plan around receiving a particular Jah, Ber, or other missing rune on your next run. Keep useful drops and check which ingredients you can obtain through available upgrades.

Check Your Inventory Between Batches of Runs

Before starting a session, record the ingredients missing from one chosen recipe. After a batch of runs, compare your new drops with that list.

Check whether you obtained a missing rune directly or collected enough matching copies for an available Horadric Cube upgrade.

Also identify the real obstacle before continuing. When your rune requirements are complete but the correct base is missing, switch your attention to equipment drops instead of continuing to farm unrelated ingredients.

Upgrade Only What Your Recipe Needs

Rune upgrades use the Horadric Cube. A basic upgrade is 3 Tir → 1 Eth: place the matching runes into the Cube and transmute them. Higher upgrade recipes can also require gems.

For example, you can combine 2 Ber runes and 1 Grand Sapphire to create 1 Jah rune. Rune quantity, gem type, and gem quality must match the selected recipe.

There is an important limit: the lower upgrade chain ends at Sol, while the higher chain begins with Mal. Mal cannot be crafted through that lower chain. You cannot simply accumulate unlimited Tir runes and upgrade them continuously into every higher rune.

Keep ingredients in their current form until you know which conversion helps your target. An available upgrade is an option, not an instruction to use it immediately.

Reserve the Final Ingredients Before Making Jah

Consider an Enigma craft when you already have the correct white chest, one Ith, three Ber runes, and a Grand Sapphire.

Combine two Ber runes with the Grand Sapphire to make Jah. The remaining Ber stays available for Enigma. You then have the three required runes: Jah, Ith, and Ber. This is a materials calculation, not a recommendation that upgrading Ber is always the best acquisition method.

Starting with only two Ber creates a different result: you can make Jah, but you still lack the Ber required for the final item.

Reserve the ingredients for the finished Runeword before spending duplicates on intermediate upgrades.

Use a Crafting Planner Before Spending

Use the DiabloFilter Runeword Crafting Planner to enter your rune inventory and check which Runewords you can make. Review possible Horadric Cube upgrade paths, missing runes, and any required gems before spending your materials.

Choose one target, enter your actual inventory, and examine the complete conversion path. Then check what remains after those ingredients are consumed. Materials you are saving for another item should not be treated as freely available.

A planner shows what is possible—not necessarily what is worth spending.

Where your game mode allows trading, compare the cost of obtaining the missing ingredient with the resources consumed by upgrading. Do not assume either option is always cheaper. In Solo Self-Found, base the decision on your own available materials and farming goals instead.

Choose a Runeword that solves a current equipment problem, then work toward its exact requirements. Keep the appropriate base visible, reserve the final ingredients, and use upgrades only where they close a specific gap.

Once you have a usable result, return to progressing your character. Repeated crafting for a better version should be a deliberate next goal—not something that prevents you from benefiting from the item you have already made.
