Square Enix Is Planning to Bring Final Fantasy XIV to Xbox One

By Helen Keller2016-08-22

Final Fantasy XIV, the popular MMO currently available on PC, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4, could be coming to Microsoft’s Xbox One after all, despite comments made in the past Square Enix that such a thing wasn’t possible due to the latter console not supporting cross-platform play. With Microsoft’s recent moves to start allowing cross-server play and “not leaving anyone behind,” Square Enix is more open to releasing the game on its console. Director Naoki Yoshida delivered good news about talks with Microsoft in an interview with Polygon, saying that they are underway.

Microsoft actually approached the Final Fantasy 14 team about the cross-platform opportunity. When our team reviewed the regulations that are associated with that, we realized that Microsoft may not have the experience or understanding of running an MMORPG as an online game genre just yet. The Final Fantasy 14 team has fed back to Microsoft that there are certain elements of its regulations that we would have to consider waived. We’re waiting on Microsoft’s response for that, but we are having discussions.

At Gamescom in Cologne, Germany, there has been a quite interesting chat with Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn Director and Producer Naoki Yoshida, about the possibility of an Xbox One version of the game. Yoshida-san explained that he had a meeting with Microsoft a week ago about cross-platform gameplay. However, there are regulations Microsoft has in place about cross-platform games, that don’t really adapt well to a MMORPG.

Unless Microsoft adapts those regulations, it’s really difficult to materialize an Xbox One version of the game. However, Yoshida-san and Microsoft had talks about this topic quite a lot of times already, and next month around Tokyo Game Show another meeting is planned with Microsoft’s team coming from the headquarters in Seattle. During this meeting, Yoshida-san would like to go over the details of cross platform gameplay.

Folks can also mark your calendars not to miss the official details for “Final Fantasy XIV” new expansion this October. But before that, you can check out “FFXIV Patch 3.38” coming in August and “FFXIV XV” in September.
