  • Crafting Writs Guide of the Elder Scrolls Online

    By Delia Woolf2017-01-19

Writs are special crafting assignments in The Elder Scrolls Online. These quests are repeatable and can be completed once every 20 hours. Completing Writs will grant you experience, crafting inspiration, and provide you with a treasure chest that you can open to receive random rewards, including crafting materials and maps to special harvesting zones that have double the materials and feature legendary drops.

Completing crafting writ quests in the ESO will sometimes yield a crafting survey as one of the quest rewards. These surveys are similar to treasure maps, in that they depict an obscure location that is somewhere in the zone the crafting writ quest is completed in.

    Certification

Crafting Writ CertificationBefore you can take crafting writs, your character will need to be certified in a particular crafting skill. Fortunately this is way easier than you might think: simply walk to the nearest Writ Board in a city of your choice, and then visit a certification trainer NPC in Davon’s Watch, Vulkhel Guard, or Daggerfall.

These certification trainers will give you a quest explaining the basics of crafting. There are two separate certification trainers: one for equipment crafting professions which are Woodworking, Blacksmithing and Clothing, and the other for consumable crafting which are Alchemy, Provisioning, and Enchanting.

You can only have ONE certification quest from EACH of these trainers at any given time but you only need to complete the certification process once, so you will quickly go through all 6 of these quests. Do note that your character must be at least level 6 before you can take on certification.

In case you have Rank 10 in a particular profession already, you can completely skip the certification process by selecting the right dialogue options when talking to trainers. If you’re already experienced with crafting or if you read our crafting basics guide, you’re likely safe to skip certification altogether as it won’t teach you anything new.

    Taking Crafting Writs

They are generally pretty hard to miss, but if you’re wondering where to grab crafting writs this should help explain it.

Once a day you can visit a Writ Board in any major city in the game and pick up your daily quests. Assuming you’re certified in all professions, you can pick up all 6 writs at the same time.

Crafting writ quests are fairly straightforward. You’ll be required to create specific items corresponding your skill level in a profession, and deliver them to NPCs who requested them.

    Rewards for Crafting Writs

Alchemy: Survey maps are fairly common, and lead to a location with up to 16 alchemy ingredient flowers (although several are usually blessed thistle). Regular rewards usually also include 3 of a random ingredient or solvent. Worthwhile overall, but the benefit is fairly small for the time spent, so works best if you are still levelling up Alchemy. Note: Save excess/spare potions made for future alchemy writs - they often repeat.

Blacksmithing: receiving only a single trait gemstone (i.e. a junk item) as a writ reward is fairly common. The writ requires using 78-102 ingots (which cost a lot to buy) for a reward item valued around 100g (plus more reward gold, as of patch 1.5.3). Only worthwhile if you get the Survey map occasionally, and can get some nirnstone this way (skill point level 7/9 and up, Upper Craglorn locations only). Even if you get the survey report, the nodes have less voidstone than are used in crafting the required items, so you will need to farm a lot of nodes to get more materials (or buy). Dubious.

Clothier: Similar to blacksmithing in the amount of materials used (mostly cloth, sometimes hides), and chance of receiving some nirncrux (as of patch 1.5.4).

Enchanting: Most common reward is a green glyph with a rare enchant of your level. If you are lucky enough to get a survey map, it has 8 double-nodes, and I have found up to 4 Rekuta at a survey site. It's easy and worth doing, but you can do just about as well by farming some of the starter zones for glyphs.

Provisioning: At highest level, you MAY gain food components that otherwise cost 63g each from a Grocer. If you have the passive to make multiple portions, save the excess as the writ requirements often repeat, so you do not need to make the foods/drinks anew each time, but still get a reward. (Bargain!) You also get a small amount of gold from selling a basic recipe - or might get a purple recipe if lucky. Worthwhile!

Woodworking: The writ requires using 99 Sanded Nightwood, about 33 nodes worth (and difficult to buy for less than 1200g) for a typical reward of around 500g value (estimate). Only worthwhile if you get the Survey map, and can get one or two nirnstone this way. Overall, probably not worthwhile unless you are still levelling up.

To make use of the coordinates, I recommend installing a map add-on that displays the coordinates of your location. That will allow you to find all of the locations for the surveys. See the links page for a good add-on manager.

In conclusion crafting writs are a great addition to the game, giving you yet another reason to log in every day. Writs are a fast-track way to level up professions, though it will still take some time.

Writs are very much worth completing every day even if you already have max rank in tradeskills, since you have a decent chance to receive legendary Tannins, Resins, and Tempers.

Survey reports will also give you a decent amount of raw materials you can refine for an even greater chance at valuable materials, and once you reach Craglorn and start getting valuable Nirncrux you’ll quickly get used to the idea of completing Writs on a daily basis.
