Full Guide of the Elder Scrolls Online Player vs. Player

By Delia Woolf2016-08-16

In most MMO games PvP is just a separate part that does not affect the game itself. But in Elder Scrolls Online it is implemented into general game story as Alliance War. Three alliances are fighting between each other and you are the member of one of them. Your impact into world PvP helps your faction to win Alliance War and to control Imperial City. When your faction controls the Imperial City it is possible to challenge Molag Bal and his armies.

There are no Battlegrounds in ESO and developers are not going to add them in future. All player vs. player fights take place in Cyrodiil only. On one hand, that's not good, but on the other hand, such system allows to gather all PvP fighters in one location.

Cyrodiil

Cyrodiil is a huge province where all action of Alliance War takes place. Why Cyrodiil? Because the Ruby Throne is situated here. The faction that controls the throne rules in Tamriel.

Elder Scrolls Online does not force you to fight against others and you will not have to visit Ctrodiil in your quests. PvP is not an obligation and you can enjoy PvE content in other provinces without necessity to protect yourself. Nobody can attack you outside of Cyrodiil. There are no duels in the game and if you wish to fight against other players you will have to go to the dedicated zone.

The great thing about ESO is that Alliance War does not mean only fighting against other players. There are many familiar towns where you will be able to take different quests, there are public dungeons that you can visit, dark anchors that you can destroy, Mages Guild’s books, resources for crafting, and different places for exploration. You will meet a lot of NPCs who need your help.

Map

Long-time fans of the Elder Scrolls series should instantly recognize the map, as PvP actually takes place in Cyrodiil. The province is split up into three sections for the three different Factions.

The Elder Scrolls Online PvP Guide

The map is quite large as it encompasses all of Cyrodiil in one zone, unlike other parts of the Map, where provinces are split into smaller zones. Travel around the map can be sped up thanks to the Wayshrines which let you teleport to other shrines, so long as your group has control of it and it is connected to the grid properly. Of course mounts can also be used to speed up land travel across Cyrodiil.

How to take part in battles?

All you need to take part in AvA is to enter Cyrodiil. You can do this after reaching 10th level. All players between 20th and 50th level who enter the territory of Cyrodiil receive “battle-leveling” that temporarily enhances their attributes. Players with Battle levels do not have access to full class abilities, skills and perks. Character with battle level is not as strong as a character with real level, but anyway it's a good help.

If you wish to be useful for your party and alliance join PvP after you reach 50th level. That does not mean you should not visit Cyrodiil when you are not strong enough. You can enter the province, fight there and level up but you will not be the strongest person.

If your level is lower than 50th it will be difficult to survive in battle and you will be almost useless. Other players will not have any problems killing you. Characters with Veteran Rank 1 - 10 are more useful but are still not strong enough. You can really enjoy sieges and combat if you have maximum level: Veteran Rank 14.

Death in Cyrodiil is also different from that on the faction grounds. The player that is killed in the battlefield can be revived with the Soul Gem. If he is not revived, he can resurrect in the nearest camp. Your equipment will then not be damaged and you can return to the battlefield.

Campaigns

After reaching level 10, each player can select the campaign that he wants to join. Campaigns are dynamic quests so, you can participate them whenever you want to. After you have selected the campaign, you will be teleported to the PvP (Cyrodiil) zone, right into the middle among the three factions. Due to the differences in experience levels, all players are similar, in terms of attack and defense statistics.

The objectives during the campaigns can be divided into two types:

Seizing of towers - the easiest way to create faction routes. Seizing of towers is dynamic and, at any moment, the opposing faction can recapture the tower that they earlier lost. If the battle for the tower is under way, it is marked with two crossed swords, on the map. Numbers and the harmonization of the players play the vital role here. In every tower, there are two flags, whose seizing means seizing the tower. The tower that has been captured by a faction, remains in the same condition as during the capturing process. To fix the walls, and the gates of the towers, the participants of the battle need to use repair kits, which can be bought around Cyrodiil for Alliance Points.

Seizing of the Elder Scrolls - seizing of an Elder Scroll comes with considerable bonuses for the entire faction. By default, each faction has two such scrolls and receives bonuses from them, as long as they are kept in special fortresses. The opposing faction can capture the scroll at any point and take it to their fortress, to receive the bonus. During this event, on the map, there will appear a scroll icon and the direction in which it is moving.

Objectives

There are many different objectives in Cyrodiil: keeps, towns, villages, mines, outposts and fortresses. The general goal of the faction is to take under control and defend as many objectives as possible. Each object your faction controls boosts overall score of your faction and gives bonuses to all faction members. The score is used to determine the winner of Alliance War.

The core goal of the war is to take under control all castles around Imperial City. A faction that controls all 6 castles can crown Emperor! Emperor is the strongest warrior on the battlefield with special skill line and special powers.

There are several ways to help your faction to win. You can fight against enemies and capture objects or you can support the army by setting up siege weapons, reinforcing keeps, and upgrading guards. Supporting actions do not always require direct encounters.

How to understand where the general action is? It is not difficult. Just open your map and you will see everything there. If a keep is under attack it has a splash behind it. If there is a place where some kills takes place the place will be marked with two or three crossed swords (depending on how many alliances take part in the encounter). The size of the swords on the map depends on the size of the battle. The system will show you where the action takes place and where to.

The Empire

The Emperor is a status in Elder Scrolls Online, which every player that takes part in the PvP games, in Cyrodiil, dreams of. The abilities that the player receives are unique. You cannot obtain them in any other way and they provide great advantage during PvP. For obtaining the status of the Emperor, the player receives three main rewards:

Faction abilities - For capturing the Emperor's throne, the player gains access to a set of abilities, whose purpose is to make the faction more effective. He can improve on the battlements and gates, or repair the destroyed siege engines, which provides a great advantage in the battlefield. During a siege of fortresses, the faction that controls the throne of Cyrodiil, receives two bonuses, which makes it more difficult to seize them. The players remaining within the Emperor's activity, also receive bonuses to fight and defense.

Combat abilities (for the Emperor) - all of the abilities of the Emperor are buffed. A regular player will be incapable of defeating the Emperor in one-on-one duel.

Unique items - the Emperor gains access to an unique set of armor, which cannot be obtained in any other way. It is the best set that can be obtained in the game.

To become the Emperor, the player needs to meet two requirements:

Capturing of the fortress- Capturing of fortresses is very difficult, and this is the success that the entire faction needs to work towards. To gain access to the Emperor's throne, all six fortresses around it need to belong to one faction

The highest score The player, whose faction seized all six fortresses around the throne, and scored the most Alliance Points, becomes the emperor

Balance in Alliance War

The game has three playable factions: Aldmeri Dominion, Daggerfall Covenant and Ebonheart Pact. If one faction becomes too powerful representatives of other two can start working together against it to change the situation. The more objects your faction controls the more difficult it becomes to defend all these objects.

PvP Mechanics

Combat in Elder Scrolls Online is not rotation-based. Abilities do not have cooldowns and combat mechanics is based on resource management. There are three main pools: stamina, magicka and health. Each spell, skill or ability requires one of these resources.

Stamina management is very important for melee warriors because stamina pool is used for interrupting, blocking and stealth. Magicka management is important for mages, sorcerers, healers.

PvP mechanics is also based on your skill. The better you block, interrupt, react and use synergy the more experience points you receive and the quicker your ultimate bar recharges. Ultimate points allow to use Ultimate abilities. If you perform well in combat you recharge your Ultimate skills quicker and can use these skills more often. Player’s skill is a very important part of PvP mechanics in Elder Scrolls Online.

Best PvP class

Your performance in Alliance War depends not on your class. Everything depends on your mastery in using spells and abilities. A good PvP fighter knows pluses of every ability and can choose how to act in current situation. Every class is good in ESO.

Resources

Resources are the three mills that surround each keep. There is the Lumber Mill, the Farm and the Mine. If your Alliance owns a keep thoses resources will level up over time and provide bonuses to the defense of the keep.

Lumber Mill-The Lumber Mill gives the doors of your keep more strength.

Farm-The Farm gives the NPC guards of your keep more Health.

Mine-The Mine gives all of the walls of your keep more strength to take more hits.

Resources are important and if your keep loses all of its resources to an enemy this will cut off transitus transportation.

How to win?

ESO is a game where you need to master your class in order to achieve good results. That means you should know when and how to act, when to use ultimate spells, how to manage your main pools (magicka and stamina) and many more. The variety of possible enemies’ builds makes each battle unique. The key to success is quick reaction and understanding of game mechanics.

Tips & Tricks

You can travel to Cyrodiil at level 10. Begin by doing the starting quest and the siege equipment training. You will get skillpoints for the starting quest.

Make sure you fill your Soul Gem. While in Cyrodiil PvP battles you can use it to revive allies.

The “kill 20 enemy players” PvP quest is easy to complete if you are in a large group.

Visit the notice boards to get PvP quests in Cyrodiil.

In Cyrodiil, towns owned by NPCs have repeatable PvE quests.

To use a siege weapon you must first place it in quickslot.

If you deployed a siege you can also pick it up and take it with you when you’re done sieging. If you leave it behind, enemies can burn it down. Sieges get damaged as you fire them and every siege engine has a health bar. You and your allies can buy repair kits to repair your siege.

Catapults are best at damaging enemy players, trebuchets for walls and ballistae for damaging siege weapons.

You can leave Cyrodiil from the Wayshrine at the gate but you cannot teleport to Cyrodiil from another area. You have to get to a keep controlled by your alliance, get back to camp using a Transit Shrine and then use the Wayshrine. You can also respawn there after you die.

You can join the Alliance War by opening the PvP menu ( “L” key). In the campaigns tab you can assign yourself to one. Select the campaign again and you will be placed in queue for Cyrodiil.

Set items drop in Cyrodiil that are scaled to your level that are different from the crafted sets.

Use the Magelight ability to spot stealth enemies. When casting Magelight it stays visible even when you are sneaking.

By pressing L and R mouse buttons at the same time you can snap out of disorient and off-balance effects for 30% stamina cost.

FAQ

Is it possible to level up through PvP?

Yes, it is possible. Each player receives experience in PvP fights for killing players from other factions, for completing PvP quests, for capturing the keeps and many more. It is possible to enter Cyrodiil and level up there, but it's not the fastest way. Moreover, if you are low level character you will be killed often and this will not allow you to receive enough experience. Leveling in Cyrodiil is difficult in general.

Is it possible to loot someone’s corps?

No, it is impossible to look the corpse of your enemy in PvP. You can not take someone’s gear and nobody can take your gear or your money. When you kill an enemy you can loot his corpse to receive alliance points.
