Elden Ring Torrent Guide: How to Get Your Mount & New Skins

Torrent is Elden Ring’s spectral steed and one of the most useful tools for exploring the Lands Between. He lets you cross open areas quickly, double-jump over obstacles, use Spiritsprings, and fight enemies without dismounting.

New players can unlock Torrent shortly after entering Limgrave. Available from August 28, 2026, Elden Ring Tarnished Edition on Nintendo Switch 2 and the Tarnished Pack on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC add three customization skins for Torrent.

This guide explains how to get Torrent, equip the Spectral Steed Whistle, use mounted combat, heal and revive Torrent, and learn what is officially confirmed about the three new mount skins.

🐎 How to Get Torrent Early in Elden Ring

You do not begin Elden Ring with a mount. Torrent becomes available after you meet Melina and accept her accord.

The recommended beginner route is:

1. Complete or skip the Cave of Knowledge tutorial.
2. Leave the Stranded Graveyard and enter Limgrave.
3. Activate The First Step Site of Grace.
4. Travel north to the Church of Elleh.
5. Continue northeast along the main road toward Gatefront Ruins.
6. Rest at the Gatefront Site of Grace beside the ruins.

You can avoid the Tree Sentinel and most other enemies along this route. Reaching Gatefront does not require defeating a boss or clearing the nearby soldier camp.

Gatefront is the standard early location for triggering Melina’s first meeting and receiving Torrent.

🤝 Accept Melina’s Accord

When you rest at the Gatefront Site of Grace, a cutscene with Melina should begin. She offers to act as your maiden and lets you spend runes to level up.

Players who want to spend less time farming can also get Elden Ring runes for leveling, buying gear, and upgrading weapons.

Choose Accept.

Melina will then give you the Spectral Steed Whistle, which summons Torrent. Accepting her accord also unlocks the ability to level up at Sites of Grace.

You can refuse the offer, but doing so prevents you from leveling up and using Torrent until you speak with Melina again. If you accidentally refuse, rest at an eligible Site of Grace and accept the accord when the option becomes available.

🎺 How to Equip and Summon Torrent

The Spectral Steed Whistle is a reusable tool. It is not consumed when used, so you only need to obtain it once.

You can equip it in either of these places:

• A quick-item slot at the bottom of the Equipment menu
• One of the four shortcut positions in your pouch

The pouch is usually the better choice because it lets you summon Torrent without cycling through healing flasks, throwing items, and other equipment.

To assign the whistle to your pouch:

1. Open the main menu.
2. Move to the Pouch section on the right.
3. Select one of the four shortcut slots.
4. Choose Switch.
5. Select the Spectral Steed Whistle.
6. Use the shortcut displayed beside that pouch position.

On PlayStation and Xbox controllers, pouch items are normally activated by holding Triangle or Y and pressing the assigned directional button. PC controls depend on your current keyboard and mouse bindings, so check System → Keyboard/Mouse Settings if the shortcut is unclear.

Use the whistle again while riding to dismiss Torrent. Controller players can also press the left stick to dismount. Dismounting while moving makes your character leap from the saddle, which can help you enter combat with a quick opening attack.

⚔️ What Can Torrent Do?

Torrent is more than a faster way to move between Sites of Grace. His movement and combat abilities make many open-world encounters easier.

💨 Travel and Explore Faster

Torrent can dash across open terrain, jump over low obstacles, and perform a second jump while already in the air.

Use the double jump to:

• Cross broken paths and small gaps
• Climb uneven rocks
• Reach elevated item locations
• Correct your direction after the first jump
• Escape enemies that cannot follow across obstacles

However, a double jump does not reset a long fall. Jumping again immediately before landing will not save you from a lethal drop. Use narrow ledges to descend gradually instead of jumping directly from a high cliff.

🌪️ Use Spiritsprings

Spiritsprings appear as swirling columns of air in certain outdoor areas. Ride into one and jump to launch Torrent high into the air.

They are often used to reach cliffs, plateaus, and hidden routes. You can also land inside a Spiritspring from above without taking fall damage, making them useful for safe descents as well as upward travel.

🗡️ Fight While Mounted

Torrent allows you to use melee weapons, bows, and many sorceries and incantations while riding.

With a controller:

• Right-side attack buttons strike enemies on Torrent’s right.
• Left-side attack buttons strike enemies on Torrent’s left.
• Holding a strong attack charges the weapon before releasing the swing.

For safer mounted combat, circle slower enemies and attack once as you pass them. Do not stop directly beside a large enemy after swinging. Create distance, turn around, and begin another pass.

Weapons with long reach, including spears, halberds, greatswords, and curved greatswords, are generally easier to use from horseback. Spellcasters can maintain distance while firing at enemies that have limited ranged attacks.

Torrent is especially useful against open-field enemies, mounted knights, dragons, and groups that would otherwise surround you. He cannot be summoned in many caves, catacombs, castles, and other restricted areas.

❤️ How to Heal and Revive Torrent

Torrent has his own health and can be damaged by enemy attacks or falls.

Feed him Rowa Raisins when his health becomes low. Buy the Crafting Kit from Merchant Kalé at the Church of Elleh, then use Rowa Fruit to craft Rowa Raisins. Place them in a quick-item or pouch slot if you regularly fight while mounted.

Resting at a Site of Grace also restores Torrent for your next journey.

If Torrent loses all his health, he disappears. Use the Spectral Steed Whistle again to revive him. The game will ask whether you want to consume one charge from your Flask of Crimson Tears.

Confirm the prompt to bring Torrent back immediately. If you have no Crimson Flask charges remaining, retreat and rest at a Site of Grace before trying again. Reviving Torrent during a dangerous fight also leaves you exposed while the confirmation window is open, so create distance from the enemy first.

🎨 How to Get the Three New Torrent Skins

Three new Torrent customization skins arrive on August 28, 2026, as part of the new Tarnished Edition content.

Elden Ring Tarnished Edition includes the base game, Shadow of the Erdtree, two new starting classes, four armor sets, and three Torrent skins. Existing players on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC can purchase this content separately through the Tarnished Pack. Its standard price is €4.99, although regional pricing can vary.

As of August 25, 2026, Bandai Namco has not revealed the exact in-game menu path, official skin names, or any additional unlock requirements. No movement, health, or combat bonuses have been announced, so the skins currently appear to be cosmetic.

❓ Why Can’t I Summon Torrent?

If the Spectral Steed Whistle does not work, check the following conditions.

You Are in a Restricted Area

Torrent cannot be summoned in many indoor areas, caves, catacombs, legacy dungeons, and enclosed boss arenas. Move back into the open world and try the whistle again.

Co-op Is Active

Torrent cannot be summoned while a co-op session is active. Hosts must wait until all guest players have left before using the whistle again.

Torrent Has Been Defeated

Use the whistle and confirm that you want to spend one Flask of Crimson Tears charge. Simply pressing the whistle without confirming the revival prompt will not bring him back.

You Cannot Find the Whistle

Open your inventory and look under Tools for the Spectral Steed Whistle. You can use it directly from the inventory or assign it to a pouch or quick-item slot for faster access.

You Have Not Accepted Melina’s Accord

Return to the Gatefront Site of Grace or rest at another eligible open-world Site of Grace. Speak with Melina and accept her offer to receive the whistle.

🏁 Final Tips for Using Torrent

Unlock Torrent as soon as you reach Gatefront, place the Spectral Steed Whistle in your pouch, and keep Rowa Raisins available during mounted fights. Use double jumps for navigation rather than protection from high falls, and rely on Spiritsprings when crossing major changes in elevation.

Available from August 28, 2026, the Tarnished Edition and Tarnished Pack add three new Torrent skins, giving returning players another way to personalize the spectral steed while exploring the Lands Between.
