The FFXIV Evercold keynote at the Tokyo Fan Festival on October 31, 2026, revealed a wealth of new information about the upcoming expansion. From the newly announced job and expanded battle systems to major changes to gearing, housing, and endgame content, the presentation provided a much clearer picture of what players can expect from Version 8.0.

Although Evercold has been delayed by three weeks, Square Enix also showcased new areas, introduced several gameplay features, and explained how its redesigned progression systems will work. Some highly anticipated features, including large-scale world content, will arrive in later patches rather than at launch.

Here is a breakdown of the major announcements from the FFXIV Evercold Tokyo Fan Festival keynote.

1. FFXIV Evercold Release Date and Pre-Orders

The first major announcement was a change to the expansion's release schedule. Square Enix confirmed that Evercold needs additional development time to improve its overall quality and address bugs.

The updated release schedule is:

Event

Date

Pre-orders begin

November 4, 2026

Early Access

February 19, 2027

Full Release

February 23, 2027

The development team apologized for the delay, explaining that the additional time would help them deliver the quality expected from the expansion and fulfill the promises made during previous Fan Festivals.

Players who pre-order any edition of Evercold will receive a Kottr minion and Halone’s earrings. The earrings are expected to provide an experience bonus, similar to pre-order accessories from previous expansions. Square Enix also presented the Collector's Edition, which includes physical items such as a Reaper figure, Kotier earring, tapestry, keychain, and art box. Digital rewards include an Odin mount, an emote, and a Bastion-related cosmetic item.

2. New Job Revealed: A Crossbow-Wielding Ranged Physical DPS

One of the biggest reveals was the second new job for Evercold, Zephyr, joining Bastion, which was previously introduced at the European Fan Festival. The new job is a ranged physical DPS that fights alongside an arcane bird of prey called the Nephele. It uses a crossbow, elemental attacks, and bird-related magic to unleash coordinated attacks against enemies.

Its main features include:

- Weapon: Crossbow.

- Role: Ranged Physical DPS.

- Starting Level: 90.

- Starting Location: Gridania.

- Battle Mode: Evolve Mode only.

- Combat Style: Coordinated attacks with the Nephele, elemental abilities, and party support.

Unlike traditional jobs, this new job will only be available in Evolve Mode, just like Bastion. It will not have a Reborn Mode version. The job's combat style focuses on cooperation between the player and their bird companion. Besides dealing damage through powerful crossbow volleys and magical attacks, it also provides party support and has several movement abilities that emphasize evasion. Its artifact gear was also showcased during the keynote, featuring a distinctive fantasy aesthetic.

With the level cap increasing to 110 and new jobs arriving in Evercold, players will have more reasons to revisit leveling, gear preparation, and other progression activities. Having enough FFXIV Gil can help cover various in-game expenses along the way. Players looking for extra currency can consider MmoGah's FFXIV Gil service as one option.

3. New Story and Exploration Areas

Evercold introduces the Godless Realm Saga, taking players into a world where the Fourth has been covered in ice, making its surface unsuitable for normal life. To survive, civilizations built airships and moved into the skies. Over the following five centuries, five different realm ships developed their own societies. However, their inhabitants carry brands that prevent them from freely interacting or exchanging things with people from other realm ships, creating isolated civilizations with different cultures and ways of life. The Warrior of Light, who does not carry such a brand, brings new hope to these societies.

Alphinaud and Estinien will also play important roles in the expansion, continuing their involvement after their appearance in the Fourth during Patch 7.56. Several important characters were introduced, including Visna, a resident of the water realm ship Naglfar, and Lagertha, who serves as Naglfar's second-in-command. Her resemblance to the Warrior of Light was specifically mentioned during the presentation, suggesting that there may be more to her story. The keynote also introduced Baldr, the leader of the Ringhorn realm ship, who is associated with the Bastion character.

Square Enix presented walkthrough footage of several locations, highlighting the environmental and cultural differences between the realm ships.

Sessrymnir - Realm Ship of Earth

Sessrymnir features beautiful mountain landscapes, fields, underground caves, and large glowing crystals. Its inhabitants focus heavily on agriculture and mining, with large-scale magical rituals also playing an important role in the region.

Skidbladnir - Realm Ship of Wind

The wind-themed realm ship features extensive windmill systems, airship docks, and a large green crystal representing the element of wind. The Kettir, a cat-like race, live here alongside humans. They are particularly skilled at building airships, making the region an important center for airship production throughout the world.

Other Exploration Areas

Another showcased area features dense vegetation, enormous flowers, glowing plants, and colorful foliage. Its magical atmosphere provides a significant contrast to the other environments.

The developers also introduced a player town with an obstacle course called Hjartadunur. Both showcased player towns will feature jumping puzzles, and the development team confirmed that these challenges will be considerably harder than those in Dawntrail.

4. Realm Progression and Adventure Activity System

Evercold will introduce a more flexible progression structure that allows players to experience the expansion's zones in different orders.

Branching Realm Progression

Players will be able to choose between different zone progression paths. For example, they may complete Zone A before Zone C or choose Zone D instead. Although the different routes eventually connect to the same overall storyline, NPC dialogue and certain story details may change depending on the player's previous choices. The experience will also adjust based on player levels, making progression more flexible.

Weekly Adventure Activity System

The Adventure Activity System is being redesigned from a daily-based structure into a weekly progression system. Players earn activity points by participating in different types of content, including:

- Main Scenario Quests and other quests.

- Battle content.

- Crafting and Gathering.

- PvP.

- Other in-game activities.

As players accumulate points, their activity level increases and unlocks rewards displayed in the system's interface. Some activities are repeatable, while others are limited to once per week. This gives players more freedom to decide how and when they play instead of requiring daily participation.

Another useful change is the ability to recover missed weekly points. After earning the maximum available points for the current week, players can work toward points they missed during the previous week.

Seasons Explained

Square Enix also clarified the meaning of Seasons in Evercold. Each season will cover two major patches: one even-numbered patch and one odd-numbered patch. This follows the existing item-level progression cycle rather than introducing an entirely separate progression structure. The developers specifically emphasized that Seasons do not introduce additional fees. Players will continue paying the normal FFXIV subscription fee without extra season-related charges.

5. Reborn Mode, Evolve Mode, and Job Customization

Evercold will feature two battle modes: Reborn Mode and Evolve Mode. Reborn Mode retains the current combat system, with additional skills introduced for existing jobs. Evolve Mode is designed to provide more individuality through redesigned job mechanics and abilities. Players can switch between these modes at the same locations where they currently change jobs, including sanctuaries. The development team also confirmed that Evolve Mode is undergoing internal testing, with further adjustments and bug fixes still being made. A dedicated Live Letter featuring the lead battle designer is planned to explain the details of Evolve Mode for every job.

Other customization improvements include:

- Action skins that change the appearance of job abilities.

- More face paint layering options.

- Color pickers for eyes, hair, and skin tones.

- Additional options for gear appearance.

- More race-related customization options planned for Patch 8.1.

The new benchmark software is scheduled for early December 2026. It will allow PC players to test their systems and experiment with the new character customization options.

6. Major Battle Content and Endgame Changes

Evercold introduces several new battle systems intended to provide more activities for different types of players.

New Eight-Player Raid Difficulty: Fierce Mode

Eight-player raids will feature three difficulty levels:

- Normal

- Fierce

- Savage

Fierce Mode is designed to offer a more challenging experience without requiring extensive preparation. According to the developers, its difficulty should be comparable to or slightly easier than an Extreme Trial.

Alliance Raid Improvements

Alliance raids will be divided into two separate duties instead of requiring players to complete an entire wing in one continuous run. This change is intended to reduce the time required for individual runs and make farming specific rewards more convenient. For example, players looking for a particular piece of equipment will no longer need to complete the entire alliance raid every time.

Square Enix also announced Savage Alliance Raids, beginning with the Evangelion alliance raid series. These will be redesigned as eight-player encounters featuring mechanics comparable to the third floor of a Savage raid tier. Completing them will provide materials for further upgrading raid equipment.

Gauntlet of Power

Gauntlet of Power is a new four-player boss-rush mode arriving with Evercold's launch. Players can challenge up to five bosses in one run, with the option to vote after each battle on whether to continue.

Its main features include:

- Bosses randomly selected from a pool of more than 200 encounters.

- Matchmaking for players between Levels 51 and 110.

- Automatic content balancing that allows players to retain their current abilities.

- Boss selection limited to encounters unlocked by everyone in the party.

- Support for both premade parties and standard matchmaking.

Unlike traditional level-synced duties, the system adjusts the encounter around players at different levels. A Level 110 player can use their current abilities alongside a Level 51 player without having their skills removed.

The mode is designed for shorter play sessions and leveling different jobs. Players can also leave after a boss without being penalized for not completing the entire run. The only stated progression requirement is completing the Stormblood Main Scenario Quest, alongside meeting the Level 51 requirement.

7. New Gear Progression and Item Level Systems

Evercold introduces significant changes to how players obtain and upgrade equipment. There will be two main gear categories: Season Gear and Raid Gear.

Season Gear

Season Gear is designed for everyday players and is obtained through the Adventure Activity System. Players earn activity points, increase their activity levels, and unlock exchange items that can be used to obtain equipment. The developers showed examples of accessories at Activity Level 4 and chest equipment at Level 7.

One important improvement is that gear categories are shared across jobs. Unlocking an equipment reward makes it available for all eligible jobs. Season Gear can be upgraded once during a season, with its item level increasing from 840 to 850 in the example shown.

Raid Gear

Raid Gear is aimed at players participating in high-end content, particularly eight-player Savage raids. One major change is the introduction of individual loot. Instead of rolling against other players for raid coffers, each player will receive personal rewards that can be exchanged for equipment. Raid Gear also features customizable secondary attributes, allowing players to adjust their stats according to their preferred setup.

Unlike Season Gear, Raid Gear can be strengthened twice after its initial acquisition, with additional material slots becoming available through upgrades. The second half of a season will provide more opportunities to obtain upgrade materials through Savage raids, Savage Alliance Raids, and other content. Fully optimized raid weapons will also receive unique visual effects, with multiple effect options available for players who unlock them.

8. Other Important Evercold Updates

Several additional improvements were confirmed during the keynote.

Cross-Data Center Party Matching: North America and Europe will begin testing same-region player matching on November 10, 2026. China is scheduled to begin testing on December 1. This will allow players to use matchmaking and Party Finder across their respective physical data centers.

Level Cap Increase: The maximum character level will increase to 110.

Duty Support Improvements: Players will be able to queue for duties with friends and have NPCs fill any missing party positions. This makes it easier for smaller groups to participate in content designed for four or eight players.

Mount Speed Improvements: Obtaining any of these three mounts (SDS Fenrir/Garlond GL-Is/Hardy-Datona) will increase the base speed rank of all mounts, giving players more freedom to use their preferred mounts.

Auto Remount: Players will automatically remount after interacting with NPCs or accepting quests, provided the interaction does not take them to another area.

PvP Updates: Evercold will introduce adjustments to existing PvP jobs and the two new jobs. Patch 8.1 is also planned to bring a major PvP update, including PvP Hall of the Novice.

Housing Updates: Patch 8.1 will introduce three major housing improvements. Players will be able to customize their interior size independently of their plot size, use improved furnishing placement tools to position furniture in midair, and eventually benefit from additional housing availability. The third improvement is still under development and has no confirmed release patch.

World Content: Large-scale public field areas and world raids are still being developed. They are planned for the 8.x patch series and will not be available at launch.

Chocobo Improvements: A Chocobo companion overhaul and Chocobo-related Duty Support are planned for Patch 8.1.

9. Upcoming Final Fantasy VII and Evangelion Raids

Evercold will feature a new Final Fantasy VII collaboration raid series, supported by the Final Fantasy VII Remake development team. The first raid chapter is called Fated Collision and is scheduled for Patch 8.01.

The release schedule is:

- Patch 8.01: Normal difficulty.

- Patch 8.05: Savage difficulty.

- One week after Savage: Fierce difficulty.

Fierce difficulty will be released after Savage to avoid interfering with the World First race.

The Evangelion alliance raid series will also continue in Patch 8.1 under the title Ghosts of Desire. In addition to the standard 24-player alliance raid, the developers plan to introduce an eight-player Savage version. More details about both raid series will be revealed in future Live Letters.

Conclusion

The Tokyo Fan Festival keynote provided one of the most detailed looks at FFXIV Evercold so far. While the three-week delay means players will have to wait a little longer, the expansion appears to be bringing substantial changes to both casual and hardcore gameplay. The new Gauntlet of Power, Savage Alliance Raids, Fierce difficulty, redesigned gearing progression, and flexible Adventure Activity System are particularly notable additions. Meanwhile, housing improvements, better party matching, and expanded character customization should provide meaningful quality-of-life improvements.

Not every announced feature will arrive with Version 8.0. Large-scale world content and several major system improvements are scheduled for later patches, while some details still need clarification through upcoming Live Letters.

Overall, Evercold is shaping up to offer more variety in endgame progression while making existing content more accessible to players with different playstyles. The actual impact of these changes will become clearer once players can experience the new systems firsthand.
