Patch 0.5 has landed, and with it comes a fresh wave of build possibilities for your PoE 2 league start. Choosing the right build in the first 40–50 hours can make or break your early progression—smooth campaign clearing, stable early mapping, and the ability to defeat quest pinnacle bosses all depend on a strong start.

This Fubgun’s list highlights ten of the most reliable and enjoyable league starters for Patch 0.5. They’re not ranked in strict order, but the first six are unquestionably the strongest and most consistent options for most players.

1. Ice Shot Deadeye

This is my personal league starter, and one of the most consistently “feels good” builds since Patch 0.1. It performs well with low gear, clears the campaign smoothly, and delivers satisfying one‑shot bursts on bosses.

2. Twisters

(Deadeye or Spirit Walker)

This build is likely to be extremely popular in this league, especially since it received no nerfs in the patch notes. It offers excellent campaign progression, very high burst damage, and smooth scaling. The only drawback is that it’s an attack‑move style build.

3. Grenades/Crossbows

(Tactician or Witchhunter for Tank)

It is one of the best, if not the best, campaign builds in the entire game and stays true for entering maps as well. It received 0 nerfs this patch. Both pure grenades and pure crossbow shots are very viable and extremely good league starters.

4. Martial Artist

(Mostly quarterstaffs, but can be played with other weapons)

This build is looking to be extremely overpowered in terms of how much damage it can easily achieve. Triple bells, OP gloves, and near infinite combo generation. Does have the weakest campaign progression compared to any other class, namely in Act 1 and most of Act 2. But gets a lot better in Act 3.

5. Lich

(ED/C or plants, both using bonestorm for single target)

It is very tanky and a comfy playstyle, while it won’t have the highest boss damage. It's a very smooth and satisfying playstyle, highly recommended for anyone who wants a chill league starter. The only downside, like all casters, is being on the slower side, as you don't have access to any good movement speed early on.

6. Disciple of Varashta

(Minions, Plants, or Ice Nova)

This is the hardcore ascendancy, extremely tanky for those who want it. Minions also got a substantial buff this league. Has a few different build options.

7. Totems

(Blood mage, Infernalist, Oracle, Shaman, Invoker)

Unfortunately, totems did receive a nerf. The good thing is, they still seem extremely playable, just not as OP as before, should still be extremely good for atlas progression and early progs, but presumably it's a build you would swap off of eventually.

8. Shield Wall Warrior

(Smith of Kitava or Warbinger)

Despite the nerfs, shield wall is still a very solid start, won't scale as hard as other choices because of the lack of speed this class brings, but for those that want to play warrior, this is the league starter for you.

9. Bear Shaman

Only received slight nerfs, but with people fine-tuning their build after having a full league to play Druid, it's a really solid starter for those who liked it last patch. Also scales very well, eventually getting near full-screen AoE.

10. Elementalist Caster

(Usually spark)

While not the strongest, this is usually the go-to Elementalist caster for those who want to play it. Other endgame setups will outscale this character, but it's a solid league starter for spell enjoyers.

Conclusion

These ten builds represent the most reliable and enjoyable league starters for PoE 2 Patch 0.5. Whether you prefer ranged, melee, spellcasting, or minions, there’s a strong option here to carry you through the campaign and into early mapping with confidence. As the league progresses and players refine their setups, I’ll continue updating recommendations and deeper build guides to help you stay ahead throughout your journey in Wraeclast.
