Housing has finally arrived in World of Warcraft, and day one gives you a surprising amount to unlock right away. Buying Your Plot
If you have pre-purchased Midnight, you can buy a home and join a neighborhood immediately.
If you have not, you can still start collecting décor and leveling your home now—your plot just can’t be purchased until the expansion launches. Buying your plot is the top priority because it unlocks the entire housing system.
How the Tutorial Starts
New players must finish the Exile’s Reach introductory experience. After completing the zone, the housing tutorial becomes available. Returning or active players receive a pop-up quest the moment they log in. This directs you to your faction’s new housing region. The tutorial gives you a guided tour of these faction-specific housing zones. Each has unique scenery, vibes, and plot layouts.
Choosing Your Plot
Once you finish the tour, you can pick your plot. This choice matters:
- Some plots are close to the main hub.
- Others are quiet, tucked away, or scenic.
- Neighborhood feel varies—some active and social, others calm and isolated.
Pick the environment that fits your playstyle and the long-term aesthetic you want.
Unlocking the Basics
After claiming your plot, you’ll unlock initial housing vendors, interior and exterior customization tools, a starter décor set, and house & plot permission settings (You can decide whether your home is open to everyone, friends only, guildmates only, or private). You’ll also unlock fast travel to your home via the housing interface or portals in Stormwind and Orgrimmar. Although full neighborhood features won’t activate until the Midnight expansion goes live, you can still choose your neighborhood beginning December 2. This matters later, as neighborhoods will affect community events, endeavor progress, décor reward opportunities, and house leveling. Take time to explore options and preview multiple plots before committing.
Leveling Your Home
Once your plot is set, you can start leveling your house. Home leveling unlocks two major forms of progression:
1. New Rooms and Floor Plans
Leveling grants access to more room types, larger room shapes, and multi-room layouts. This is how you expand your floor plan and customize your interior.
2. Increased Décor Capacity
Higher housing levels allow more furniture placements, more wall items, and more exterior pieces. Even before endeavors go live, you can level your home. You can do this by adding new décor items to your collection, obtaining rare or special pieces, and completing housing-related achievements.
Vendors
Housing vendors are found everywhere, from faction capitals to older expansion zones.
Neighborhood Vendors
Your neighborhood includes foundational décor vendors, rotating visiting vendors with unique offerings, and vendors who sell community coupons (earned through neighborhood endeavors and quests). An active neighborhood will earn more currency and unlock more special décor.
Capital City Vendors
Stormwind and Orgrimmar offer quick-to-access vendors with broad décor selections—ideal for expanding your catalog early on.
World Vendors
There are more than 120 décor vendors across Azeroth. They use different currencies depending on the expansion. For example, vendors in Dragon Isles require Dragon Isles Supplies, and vendors in Suramar require Ancient Mana. Some may require quests or offer rotating daily inventories.
Because the vendor system is huge, the community-created WoW DB Housing Hub is invaluable. It includes exact vendor locations, waypoint links for Pins/TomTom, full vendor inventories, and required currencies. Bookmark it—it will be one of your most-used tools.
Using Professions for Crafted Décor
Professions play a massive role in the housing system. Every profession can craft décor, making this an efficient way to build your collection. For example, Leatherworking offers furniture tied to hides and leathers. What’s more, many expansions received new housing recipes—check every expansion tab in your profession UI.
Many crafts also require lumber. To unlock it, you need to speak with the lumberjack trainer in your neighborhood. Then, gather lumber types tied to specific expansions. For example, Dragonflight décor uses Dragonpine lumber, and BFA décor uses Darkpine lumber, etc.
If you want recolor options for Dye crafting, you’ll need Inscription and Alchemy. Talk to the inscription and alchemy trainers in Razorwind Shores or Founder’s Point, then visit trainers across older expansions to unlock their dye recipe groups. If you don’t plan to craft dyes yourself, check the Auction House early—prices will spike fast. Achievements for Décor Rewards
There are 150+ achievements that reward décor. Search for “décor” in the achievement window to see: rewards you already have, achievements you’re missing, and requirements for each item.
