Subclassing is coming to The Elder Scrolls Online with Update 46, set to release on June 2nd for PC and June 18th for consoles. This game-changing feature allows you to customize your character like never before by swapping up to two of your class skill lines for those from other classes. Spopes's video has everything you need to know to get ready for this update.

What Is Subclassing?

Subclassing is a new feature being introduced in Update 46 of The Elder Scrolls Online. It's an incredible addition, but it also brings significant changes. With subclassing, you can sacrifice up to two skill lines from your class to gain skill lines from other classes. You can only select one skill line from each class, but any class skill lines are available as long as you level them to 50. There's also a brief preliminary quest to complete.

This feature will be released with Update 46 on either June 2nd or June 18th, depending on your platform (PC or console). Subclassing will be fantastic, but it does come with some costs, as you'll need to invest considerable effort and gather a lot of skill points.

While ZOS has been relatively quiet about the specifics, players who have tested it on the Public Test Server have shared insights. As of May 22nd, here's what we know: Subclassing is a new way to customize your character and is free for everyone. You can swap out up to two of your character's three inherent skill lines for options from other classes. You can change your skill lines whenever you use a Shrine of Stendarr or a Scroll of Respecification.

Here are some pro tips: Using the Shrine of Stendarr to change your skill lines costs gold. The Skill Respecification Scroll can be purchased from the Crown Store. Additionally, you may occasionally receive the Skill Respecification Scroll as a Daily Login reward, so be sure to check the in-game calendar for its availability.

How to Prepare for the Subclassing System of ESO

Getting Ready for Subclassing

Level Requirement

To access the ESO subclassing quest, you need at least one character at level 50. For most players, this shouldn't be an issue, as many likely have several characters at that level. However, if you haven't reached Champion Point level yet, now is the time!

Maxing Out Class Skill Lines

Keep in mind that only fully maxed skill lines can be subclassed. For example, with the Arcanist, if you have maxed out Herald of the Tome, Soldier of Apocrypha, and Curative Runeforms, all three can be subclassed. If you haven't leveled your class skill lines to 50 yet, prioritize that now.

Leveling Subclassed Skill Lines

Once you subclass a skill line on a new character, you'll need to level it up to 50. However, once a skill line reaches level 50 on one character, it will be available at that level for all other characters that choose it for subclassing. Be aware that leveling these skill lines will present additional challenges.

Skill Points Needed

Subclassing will require a significant number of skill points—specifically, twice the amount needed for regular skills. For instance, in Curative Runeforms, it costs one skill point to unlock Evolving Runemend and another for its morph. With subclassing, you'll need two skill points for each skill, morph, and passive. This means you'll require four skill points for each maxed passive ability. In total, you'll need around 40 skill points per subclass skill line.

The Impact of Subclassing

Shifting Meta

One important point to consider is the potential shift in the game's meta. With the introduction of subclassing, there could be over 3,000 combinations of builds instead of just seven classes. This diversity will make it difficult for the game to center around a single meta. While this opens up exciting possibilities for build diversity, it also means that unconventional builds might outperform traditional roles in DPS, healing, or tanking.

Endless Combinations

The variety is staggering—going from seven options to thousands! Players will be excited to explore new builds, like 100% pet builds or pure healing builds. This flexibility will allow players to fill roles in group content more effectively, but it also raises questions about how subclassing will affect Overland content, which is already quite easy.

Final Thoughts

Subclassing is an incredible addition to ESO, giving players more freedom to experiment with unique builds. To make the most of this feature, start preparing now by leveling your characters, maxing out skill lines, and gathering as many skill points as possible. The possibilities are endless—get ready to redefine your adventure in Tamriel!
