Top 6 Mistakes to Avoid in ESO's New Tamriel Tomes System

The Elder Scrolls Online has introduced the Tamriel Tomes system, a seasonal battle pass–style feature where players earn Tome Points to unlock rewards, mainly cosmetics and special currencies rather than traditional rewards like ESO gold. As with any new system, there's a bit of a learning curve, and YouTuber, Spopes has already made some mistakes that he wish he could take back. To help you avoid the same pitfalls, he has compiled a list of the top six mistakes players should steer clear of when diving into this system.

1. Using All Your Tome Point Caches at Once

This is arguably the most critical mistake to avoid. If you've received Tome Point caches as part of your ESO Plus subscription, resist the urge to open them all at once. To unlock every single page in the Tamriel Tome system, you'll need a maximum of 22,000 points. Anything beyond that will likely go to waste since you can only carry over 2,000 points to the next season.

For instance, opening all 13 caches you've accumulated could lead to earning far more points than you need. Not only will most of these points be lost at the end of the season, but it also removes any incentive to complete weekly or seasonal challenges. The system is designed to promote engagement throughout the season, so a smarter approach is to open fewer caches and earn points through challenges. If you're an ESO Plus subscriber, consider using a maximum of 11 caches this season and saving the remaining ones for future seasons.

2. Automatically Redeeming Your Free Premium+ Tome

For those who recently subscribed to or renewed their ESO Plus membership, you've likely received 12 Premium Tome Tokens that can unlock bonus rewards in the Premium+ track. While it may be tempting to redeem these tokens immediately, take a moment to evaluate whether this season's rewards are worth it.

If you find the Premium and Premium+ rewards this season are not worth the investment and you're already earning plenty of Tome Points through your ESO Plus membership, the additional 4,000 points from the Premium+ track may not add much value. You might want to save those tokens for a future season when the rewards are more appealing.

3. Buying the Premium Tome for Access to Content

A common misconception is that purchasing the Premium or Premium+ pass is required to access new content. This is not the case.

The Tamriel Tome system is entirely optional and focuses on offering cosmetic rewards and additional in-game currencies. All new content in ESO is free for anyone who owns the base game—whether you purchased it on sale or at full price, whether or not you have an ESO Plus subscription.

If you're considering purchasing the Premium or Premium+ pass, make sure it's because you genuinely want the rewards offered this season. Otherwise, your money might be better spent on other in-game purchases or saved for a future season.

4. Assuming Weekly Challenges Are Group-Friendly

If you're planning to tackle weekly challenges with friends or guildmates, think again. Unlike the Endeavor system, weekly challenges in the Tamriel Tome system are randomized for each player. This means that while your challenge might involve completing group dungeons, your friends might have entirely different objectives.

While this isn't necessarily a deal-breaker, it does make group play less convenient. If you still want to complete challenges as a group, one option is to roll your challenges until they align with your friends' tasks. Alternatively, you can stack challenges over multiple weeks (up to a maximum of 12) to increase the chances of overlap with your group members. Even so, the system isn't very group-friendly, so you may find it easier to complete challenges solo or look for others with matching objectives through platforms like Discord.

5. Overlooking Repeatable Weekly Challenges

One commonly overlooked feature of the weekly challenges is that many of them can be completed multiple times for additional rewards. For instance, while some challenges may appear less rewarding at first glance (e.g., offering only 60 Tome Points), they often include a note indicating that they can be completed multiple times—sometimes up to three or six times.

This means that these challenges can yield significantly more points than they initially seem. Make sure to carefully read each challenge description to see if it can be repeated, as this could be an efficient way to maximize your point earnings.

6. Sticking With Unappealing Weekly Challenges

Lastly, don't feel stuck with weekly challenges that don't align with your playstyle or interests. The Tamriel Tome system allows you five rerolls per week for your weekly challenges, giving you some flexibility to swap out tasks that you're unlikely to complete.

For example, if you're not interested in tackling difficult group content like Sanctum Ophidia, use one of your rerolls to generate a different challenge. You can even reroll the same challenge multiple times if necessary until you find something more suitable for your playstyle. This feature ensures that you can tailor your weekly objectives to activities you actually enjoy.

Final Thoughts

The Tamriel Tome system is a promising addition to The Elder Scrolls Online, offering a fresh way to earn rewards and engage with different types of content. However, it's not without flaws.

Key concerns include:

• Underwhelming premium rewards

• Limited carryover of Tome Points between seasons

• Lack of safeguards to prevent overuse of resources

That said, the system does provide flexibility, especially for ESO Plus players who can accelerate progression and unlock rewards more quickly.

For a new system, the Tamriel Tome has solid potential—but success with it depends on smart resource management and informed decision-making. By avoiding these common mistakes, you can maximize your rewards, maintain long-term progression, and enjoy the system as it continues to evolve.

As the ESO community continues to explore and adapt, staying informed will be key to getting the most out of each season.
