The Echo of Mephisto, also known as the Lord of Hatred, is one of the most challenging endgame bosses in Diablo 4 Season 13. Only players with top-tier builds, high mobility, and precise timing can survive his devastating attacks. This guide walks you through everything you need to know—from preparation and gear requirements to dungeon location and detailed strategies for all three phases of the fight. By following these tips, you’ll maximize your chances of surviving each deadly attack and claiming Mephisto’s legendary rewards.

What is the Echo of Mephisto

The Echo of Mephisto is a legendary endgame boss in Season 13, infamous for its extreme difficulty and complex multi-phase fight. Known as the Lord of Hatred, this boss appears after defeating the Echo of Akarat. It challenges players with devastating area attacks, skill-stealing mechanics, and relentless high-damage patterns. Only players with top-tier builds, high mobility, and precise timing can survive its attacks. Defeating the Echo of Mephisto not only tests a player’s mastery of the game’s mechanics but also grants access to the final chapter of the season and its treasured hoard, making it a pivotal encounter for progression and rewards.

Prepare before the fight with Mephisto

To face the Echo of Mephisto, the first requirement is an S-tier build capable of clearing Pit 115 and equipped with a strong mobility skill. This level of damage and toughness is generally needed to have a realistic chance against the boss.

All Diablo 4 gear should be fully tempered and masterworked, including Mythics and Uniques, a complete set of charms, and Legendary glyphs. Key skills include high mobility for dodging attacks and defensive abilities like Fortify for emergency protection. During the fight, understanding the boss’s attack patterns, maintaining constant movement, and using health potions strategically are critical for survival.

Where to Find the Echo of Mephisto

The Echo of Mephisto can be found at the False Prophet Capstone Dungeon in the Atanos region of Skovos. Players must first enter this dungeon and defeat the False Prophet, Echo of Akarat, before Mephisto appears. This dungeon features the same layout as the final level of the Lord of Hatred expansion, but with additional challenges, including multi-phase boss mechanics. Teleporting directly to this dungeon is the recommended way to reach the Echo of Mephisto for the fight.

How to Fight the Echo of Mephisto

Upon entering the dungeon, you will first face the Echo of Akarat, as Mephisto does not appear immediately. This initial encounter is part of a three-phase fight. Players must learn and adapt to Akarat’s attacks before advancing to face the Echo of Mephisto, making Phase 1 critical for preparation and survival.

Phase 1: Fighting the Echo of Akarat

First Attack: Akarat casts a large frontal swipe with six beams, usually in straight lines, combined with lightning strikes that cover almost the entire arena. To avoid this, stay at his side while he casts, or position yourself in the small gaps between the beams.

Second Attack: He begins teleporting across the arena, attempting to strike with his sword and summoning multiple shadow clones with red circle explosions. Evade his attacks and counterattack from behind.

Third Attack: Akarat disappears into the sky and lands violently at your location, summoning lightning strikes. Evade or teleport away from your current position to survive this strike.

Fourth Attack: several shadows of him will appear, and they will all go to the center of the arena. Red circles then appear and move around, with lightning striking the center. Shortly afterward, all circles explode, followed by a red star forming around Akarat that changes and detonates. Cast your mobility skill or Fortify at the right moment, as this attack covers almost the entire arena.

Fifth Attack: When his health drops to approximately 33%, Akarat executes his deadliest attack. He flies to the center of the arena and summons multiple flying swords that chase players from random directions. Keep moving in circles and use mobility skills if trapped.

From this point, all attacks appear randomly. Stay mobile, use health potions strategically, and cast mobility skills to survive while counterattacking. Once you deliver the killing blow, Akarat and his shadows retreat to the pool of creation, triggering a cutscene.

After this cutscene, the Echo of Mephisto appears, marking the start of Phase 2.

Phase 2: Fighting the Echo of Mephisto

Phase 2: Fighting the Echo of Mephisto

First Attack:
The Echo of Mephisto summons fireballs from the sky, which leave black circle markers indicating where they will land. You must keep running continuously until all fireballs have fallen. After surviving this attack, resist the urge to immediately counterattack; instead, move toward the edge of the arena in preparation for the second attack.

Second Attack: Mephisto creates poison pools that emit waves of poison. Unlike the campaign version, these pools appear both at the center and edges of the arena, and the waves travel in both directions. The most effective way to survive is to cast your mobility skill at the right moment. Once this attack ends, you will have a brief window to counterattack before the next attack begins.

Third Attack: Mephisto fires a shadow beam at the player. Being hit for more than a second is fatal, so you must evade or move around him while he rotates. Following this, Mephisto teleports near the corrupted pool of creation and begins consuming the souls of humans, preparing for his fourth attack.

Fourth Attack: Red balls with trailing spikes and shadows sweep across the arena at high speed. Maintain constant movement and watch closely to anticipate where Mephisto will teleport, giving you an opportunity to counterattack.

After surviving all attacks and delivering the killing blow, a cutscene triggers, transporting the player to the Heart of Hatred, marking the start of the final phase.

Phase 3: The Final Battle with Mephisto

The Final Battle with Mephisto

First Attack:
As soon as the cinematic ends, the Echo of Mephisto casts red circular waves. Wait for the wave to expand, then evade or teleport into the wave’s origin to avoid damage from the smaller waves.

Second Attack: Mephisto will steal your powers, which becomes your top priority. Your abilities are locked in white orbs of light in the pool, and retrieving them quickly is essential for survival. Movement speed is critical, as you have only a few seconds to reach the orbs before Mephisto launches another attack. There is some luck involved, especially in recovering your mobility skill first, which allows you to reclaim the rest of your powers.

Third Attack: Mephisto will clap his hands, summoning a line of demonic hands in the pool that also clap. Being caught by these hands results in instant death, so move away as soon as you see the animation. He will follow with a second wave of Hands of Hatred, requiring continuous movement to survive.

Fourth Attack: If you are far from Mephisto, he may perform a sweeping arm attack across the pool. This is almost impossible to dodge, so use your mobility skill or rely on your mercenary Raheir if equipped to survive.

Fifth Attack: Mephisto summons blood tornadoes and slams the ground, releasing red centipedes that traverse the arena. The safest place is close to Mephisto, while using mobility skills to survive if needed. Subsequently, huge faces emerge from the dark water, firing red energy balls that are channeled into a massive red energy beam. Use mobility skills to escape and evade around him.

Mephisto will then submerge and summon a violent whirlpool, stealing your powers for a second time. Quickly recover your mobility skill or evade to avoid instant death. After surviving, reclaim your powers. At this point, attacks occur almost continuously, so stay close, use mobility skills when needed, and counterattack relentlessly.

Once you deliver the killing blow, Mephisto declares himself eternal, light erupts from within him, and he is finally defeated. Congratulations—you have defeated the Echo of Mephisto, Lord of Hatred, unlocking the final chapter of Season 13.
