At the latest Fan Festival keynote, Square Enix officially revealed the next expansion for Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold (8.0). While new expansions typically bring fresh dungeons, raids, and story content, this announcement went far beyond expectations. In fact, Evercold introduces some of the most fundamental system-wide changes in the game's history—arguably making this the most impactful keynote the game has ever seen. Let's break down everything announced.

But first of all, let's talk about Patch 7.5, as the new Ultimate raid has finally been revealed - Dancing Mad, featuring Kefka Palazzo, which is scheduled to release on June 2. The encounter is expected to be one of the most ambitious Ultimates yet, with fully voiced elements and possible hidden phases. Ultimate raids usually demand significant time and skill. If you're looking to secure rewards without the grind, MmoGah will offer Dancing Mad (Ultimate) Final Fantasy 14 boost services once it launches.

A New Saga Begins: The Godless Realms

Evercold marks the start of a brand-new long-term narrative arc known as the Godless Realms Saga, expected to unfold over the next decade. Players will journey to the Fourth, a previously unexplored shard characterized by a harsh, frozen world. Its surface is completely engulfed in ice, forcing civilization to retreat into floating settlements in the sky.

Key highlights of the setting include massive "arcane giants" roaming the frozen surface, a strong Viking-inspired aesthetic, and new allied societies, including a mysterious feline-like race.

The expansion is currently scheduled to launch in January 2027, an earlier-than-expected release window that avoids the typical holiday congestion.

A Complete Overhaul of Progression Systems

Removal of Tomestones

One of the biggest changes is the removal of the Tomestone system, a core gearing mechanic for years. In its place comes a new activity-based progression interface, designed as a central hub for weekly and seasonal rewards.

New Weekly Activity System

This new system introduces randomized weekly objectives (raids, dungeons, ocean fishing, etc.), a point-based reward track, and seasonal progression tied to patch cycles (e.g., 8.0–8.1 = one season).

The design emphasizes player choice, flexible playstyles, and reduced pressure to follow strict optimization paths. Notably, the system is not monetized in any way, maintaining the game's integrity.

Gearing and Item Level Changes

While full details are still pending, developers confirmed new methods of increasing item level, a shift away from traditional upgrade materials, and possible long-term gear progression systems. These changes aim to make gearing feel more natural and rewarding over time.

Job System Revolution

Shared Item Level across All Jobs

One of the most transformative updates is that your main job's item level now applies to all max-level jobs. This means:

  • No more re-gearing alt jobs
  • Full freedom to switch roles at the endgame
  • A truly unified character progression system

New Job Action System: Reborn vs. Evolved

Jobs will now feature two distinct modes:

Reborn Mode: Traditional leveling and skill progression, which is similar to the current system.

Evolved Mode

  • Streamlined actions with fewer button presses
  • Branching rotations and customization
  • Greater emphasis on player individuality

Both modes:

  • Share gear and level
  • Can be swapped freely outside combat
  • Are viable even in high-end content

However, existing jobs support both modes, and new jobs introduced in 8.0 will only use Evolved Mode.

New Jobs

Two new jobs are confirmed - Tank and Physical Ranged DPS. Both are completely original to FFXIV and not based on previous Final Fantasy titles. Reveals will be split across upcoming Fan Festivals.

Character Customization Expansion

Evercold significantly enhances character personalization:

  • Full color picker for hair, eyes, and skin tone
  • Improved facial customization (eyes, lips, makeup layering)

Gear Customization Upgrade

Players can now toggle individual parts of gear on/off. This dramatically expands glamour possibilities and builds upon recent improvements introduced in Patch 7.4.

New Cosmetic Systems

Action Skins is a brand-new feature that allows players to customize ability animations. This opens the door for unique visual styles and potential cosmetic rewards tied to content.

Raid and Battle Content Updates

New Raid Difficulty Tier

8-man raids will now include a third difficulty - positioned between Normal and Savage. This creates a smoother progression path and more accessibility for mid-core players.

Alliance Raid Adjustments

  • Potential restructuring to reduce completion time
  • Possible new formats (e.g., split wings or boss rush)

Cross-Region Play

A huge technical upgrade is coming - full region-wide matchmaking, which includes Duty Finder, Party Finder, and world systems. This means all North American, European, and Japanese data centers function as unified regions. This feature will begin rolling out during the 7.5 patch series, starting with testing in Japan.

Additional Content Highlights

  • New dungeons, raids, and an Ultimate encounter
  • New PvP updates
  • Partial Duty Support (mixing players and NPCs)
  • New 24-man alliance raid series in collaboration with Neon Genesis Evangelion
  • Updates to hunts, treasure maps, and gathering systems

Platform and Service Updates

  • PlayStation 4 support will end during the 8.x cycle (not at launch)
  • A Nintendo Switch 2 version is confirmed, requiring a separate subscription and offered at a discounted rate to existing players.
  • Free Trial expanded to include Shadowbringers.
  • Korean servers will catch up to the global version.

Final Thoughts

Evercold is not just another expansion—it represents a fundamental evolution of Final Fantasy XIV's core systems. From progression and gearing to job design and cross-region play, nearly every aspect of the game is being reimagined. If these systems deliver as promised, 8.0 could redefine how the game is played for years to come.
