Nek’zali on Normal and Heroic is a two-phase encounter with an intermission that combines single-target damage, add control, raid-wide damage, and coordinated positioning. The fight revolves around controlling the Restless Amani adds and preventing them from reaching the Soulwell. Ready Check Pull shared a YouTube channel, showing us how to defeat Nek’zali. Now, let’s dive in.

Preparing for Nek’zali also means making sure your character is fully raid-ready. Having enough WoW Gold on hand can help cover consumables, repairs, crafted gear, and other preparation costs before heading into Normal or Heroic raids.

WoW Midnight Venomous Abyss: Nek’zali Normal & Heroic Raid Guide

Key Mechanics to Know

There are two important mechanics that define the encounter.

Soulcoil Rite

Soulcoil Rite deals heavy raid-wide damage. It normally occurs throughout the fight whenever Nek’zali casts Soulcoil Ignition. However, the ability can also be triggered unexpectedly when a player or add enters the Soulwell. On Heroic difficulty, every Soulcoil Rite also applies Ritual Burn to the entire raid.

Ritual Burn – Heroic

Ritual Burn increases the damage players take from future Soulcoil Rites by 10% per stack. Because Ritual Burn can quickly make subsequent raid-wide damage increasingly dangerous, allowing a Restless Amani to reach the Soulwell is extremely dangerous on Heroic. The priority is simple: never let the adds reach the Soulwell.

Phase 1

At the beginning of the encounter, position Nek’zali near the Soulwell. The raid will need to manage several mechanics while dealing with the boss and controlling the Restless Amani adds.

Essence Rend

After some time, Nek’zali casts Essence Rend on several players. Players affected by Essence Rend should:

  • Run toward the edge of the room or designated wall.
  • Call for a dispel.
  • Alternatively, allow the debuff to expire naturally.

The mechanic leaves a pool of harmful ground behind, so players should place these pools away from the main raid area.

Possession Barrage

Nek’zali then targets the current tank with Possession Barrage. The targeted tank needs to run away from the boss. After a few seconds, several spirits are launched toward the tank. When the spirits reach the tank, they explode and deal significant raid-wide damage. The farther the spirits have to travel before reaching the tank, the less damage they deal to the raid. Because the explosion can still cause heavy damage, healers should prepare for the incoming raid-wide hit.

Heroic: Hollowed

On Heroic difficulty, Possession Barrage also applies stacks of Hollowed to the tank. Hollowed reduces healing received by 5% per stack. The debuff can also be applied through regular boss melee attacks. Tanks should therefore perform a taunt swap whenever the Hollowed stacks fall off. The tank targeted by Possession Barrage should run away from the boss and use a defensive cooldown to help survive the mechanic.

Restless Amani Adds

The main mechanic of Phase 1 occurs when Nek’zali summons Restless Amani adds around the room. These adds must be controlled and killed before they reach the Soulwell. The recommended approach is to grip the adds, slow and stun them, break their shields, group them together, and finish them with AoE damage. The Restless Amani have a shield that causes them to slowly move toward the Soulwell. The shield is a magic absorb shield that must be broken before the add can be fully killed. Breaking the shield also stops the add from continuing toward the Soulwell.

What Happens If an Add Reaches the Soulwell?

If a Restless Amani reaches the Soulwell, it triggers Soulcoil Rite. This causes heavy raid-wide damage and, on Heroic, gives every player another stack of Ritual Burn. Since Ritual Burn increases the damage of future Soulcoil Rites, allowing even one add through can make the rest of the encounter significantly more dangerous. Add control is one of the most important priorities of the entire fight.

Continue handling Essence Rend, Possession Barrage, and Restless Amani until Nek’zali reaches 50% health. This starts the intermission.

Intermission: Ritual of Awakening

At 50% health, Nek’zali jumps to the Soulwell and begins channeling Ritual of Awakening. Two Echoes of Jawae spawn during the intermission. The raid needs to defeat both Echoes to bring Nek’zali back and begin Phase 2. The Echoes are primarily a damage check, but they have several mechanics that require raid coordination.

Hungering Pyre

The Echoes cast Hungering Pyre, creating a large red group-soak mechanic. The raid needs to split into two groups:

  • Half of the raid soaks Hungering Pyre.
  • The other half does not soak.

Players who do not soak receive small red circles. On Heroic, players with the resulting fire circles need to position them over the corpses of dead Amani adds. The fire burns the corpses and prevents the Amani from resurrecting. This means the raid should deliberately place the circles on the appropriate dead Amani bodies rather than dropping them randomly.

Residual Toll

Residual Toll targets several players with damage-over-time effects. The effect eventually reduces their healing received, making it particularly important for healers to monitor affected players.

Once both Echoes of Jawae are defeated, Nek’zali returns and Phase 2 begins.

Phase 2

Phase 2 is similar to Phase 1, but introduces an additional mechanic that increases the pressure on the raid. You still need to control the Restless Amani, break their shields, stop them from reaching the Soulwell, handle Possession Barrage on the tank, and manage incoming raid-wide damage.

Invoke

The new mechanic is Invoke. Whenever Nek’zali casts Invoke, the entire raid takes significant damage from Soulcoil Rite. At the same time, the pools around the room begin moving in random directions. This makes positioning and movement more difficult while the raid continues dealing with the Restless Amani and other mechanics. Healers should be prepared for the raid-wide damage, while players need to stay alert to the changing positions of the pools.

Phase 2 Enrage

Nek’zali eventually reaches full energy and triggers a hard enrage. The raid therefore needs to defeat the boss before she reaches full energy. Depending on the group's damage output, this can influence the timing of Bloodlust/Heroism. If the group can comfortably handle Phase 1, Bloodlust can be used on pull. If Phase 2 presents the tighter damage check, saving Bloodlust for Phase 2 may be the better option.

Normal vs. Heroic: Main Differences

The core strategy is the same on both difficulties, but Heroic adds several mechanics that punish mistakes more heavily:

  • Ritual Burn: Each Ritual Burn increases future Soulcoil Rite damage by 10%.
  • Hollowed: Possession Barrage and boss melee attacks contribute stacks that reduce healing received by 5% per stack.
  • Hungering Pyre: Players who do not soak receive fire circles that must be used to burn Amani corpses and prevent resurrection.

Overall, the most important lesson for Nek’zali is to control the Restless Amani and protect the Soulwell. Extra Soulcoil Rites are especially dangerous on Heroic because Ritual Burn causes the raid-wide damage to escalate throughout the fight.
