Greetings, adventurers of Azeroth. The World of Warcraft: Forever beta is in full swing, and renowned hunter player Cargos has released a massive 70-slide Beast Mastery leveling guide covering everything from pet scaling to talent builds, weapon progression, and a complete 1-60 leveling route. This article distills the core takeaways so you can hit the ground running when the game launches on November 4.

Hunter Core Mechanics: What Stayed, What Changed

What's unchanged: Hunters still deal with auto-shot wind-up time, the 8-yard dead zone, and separate ranged and melee swing timers. Melee weaving still exists, but since Multi-Shot's cooldown was cut to 6 seconds, there's far less downtime to sneak in a Raptor Strike. Pet management remains fundamental, traps still drop at your feet, and there's no modern trap launcher nonsense.

What changed: Aimed Shot is now a base line level 20 ability with its cooldown reduced from 3 seconds to 2 seconds, though it requires you to plant your feet. Multi-Shot's cooldown is down to 6 seconds and now shares a cooldown with Aimed Shot. Arcane Shot scales with attack power instead of spell power, and it no longer shares a cooldown with Aimed Shot — it shares with Summon Hawk instead. In-combat traps are a massive hunter win: you can drop a Freezing Trap and then an Explosive or Immolation Trap on the next global. Trap schools are independent of each other with a 30-second base cooldown.

Pet Scaling: The Biggest Buff Beast Mastery Has Ever Seen

This is the single most important hunter change in Forever. Pets now scale directly from hunter gear. Current beta testing shows pets inherit 100% of your critical strike chance. Grab 1% crit in the Marksmanship tree, and your pet gets it. Pop Elf Ratio for 10% crit and your pet gets 10%. On top of that, pets inherit 10% of your highest attack power source, 30% of your armor, and two health for every point of hunter stamina.

This means Beast Mastery pets are no longer a one-time tool that's strong when tamed and useless at 60. One caveat: pets can no longer receive normal player stat buffs, so healers can rejoice — no more snowball spam begging for pet buffs.

Pet abilities got a huge expansion too. Crocalisks gained Mortal Strike — the Arms Warrior healing debuff — with 10-second uptime on a 6-second cooldown. Cargos calls it potentially the best leveling pet ability, especially on PvP servers. Spiders got a web, bats got Sonic Blast, turtles got Shield Wall. Gorillas are still weak, and raptors still didn't get Dash.

Summon Hawk: The New Arcane Shot Replacement

Summon Hawk, available at level 25, is the new core Beast Mastery button. You can have two hawks active on a single target with a 6-second cooldown. The hawk has two damage components: a dive bomb for initial damage, then the hawk sits there meleeing for a bit. Cargos' testing shows the dive bomb alone outdamages Arcane Shot, and Summon Hawk's damage-per-mana is higher than Serpent Sting, second only to Immolation Trap.

This means Beast Mastery can now run a "triple DoT" setup: Immolation Trap, Summon Hawk, and Serpent Sting all ticking on the same target. Cargos describes it as "your Agony, Corruption, and Siphon Life, but Hunter green class edition."

Talent Builds and Core Choices

Cargos references the build philosophy of K Super, the current rank-one speedrun hunter on speedrun.com, recommending a Beast Mastery main with a Marksmanship splash leveling path. Core S-tier talents include:

Summon Hawk (8-12% total DPS increase for one point), Bestial Swiftness (now global movement speed instead of outdoor-only), Bestial Wrath, Unleashed Fury (1.2% total DPS per point), Focused Fire (1% damage per point for you and your pet), Frenzy, and Deadly Aspects.

On the Deadly Aspects vs. Endurance Training debate, Cargos offers practical advice: if you keep your weapon and ammo updated, your damage is already "capped" — the bottleneck is usually whether your pet stays upright. His second hunter took Endurance Training for 15% pet health and armor and felt it was more valuable.

There's one flex point to split between Improved Pet and Spirit Bond. Cargos suggests one point in Improved Pet, one in Spirit Bond, or situationally one point in Improved Monkey for an extra 5% pet dodge.

Race Choices: Night Elf and Troll Lead the Pack

Alliance side: Night Elf is S-tier. 2% passive movement speed, Shadowmeld, and a 10% crit active that buffs both hunter and pet. Cargos considers it the best PvE race. Night Elves also get ley line regeneration they can use while drinking.

Horde side: Troll is S-tier. Berserking functions like an Innervate for your health, plus passive regen and beast damage bonus. Tauren's Plainsrunning is surprisingly strong on hunter — "nothing can touch you" from 1 to 10 — though the gimmick fades once you get Cheetah at 20.

Leveling Route Essentials

Levels 1-4: Grind mobs in the starting zone to level 4. These mobs move slowly, pose little threat, have great loot tables (bags!), and let you practice melee weaving. Set up a target macro, auto-attack macro, and Raptor Strike macro.

Levels 4-6: You get Serpent Sting, but Cargos notes it was nerfed hard — only about 2 damage per tick.

Level 6: Stop using Serpent Sting once you get Arcane Shot. Rank 1 Arcane Shot "cranks for some reason," critting for roughly 50% of a mob's health.

Level 10: Train your pet ASAP. Upgrade ammo and prepare a level 11 weapon. Grab a pet with a focus dump — Trolls can get the plains wolf on the Mulgore border with rank 2 Bite and Furious Howl; Night Elves grab a nightsaber, Dwarves grab a boar (charge plus a movement speed ability, actually quite good).

Level 16: You get Immolation Trap. Cargos stresses that at this point you can't press all your buttons without going OOM. His new approach: only enter melee range when you can get value from both a Raptor Strike and an Immolation Trap. He even provides a macro that fires Raptor Strike and drops Immolation Trap in the same global.

Levels 25-30: You get Summon Hawk and Intimidation. Hawk rhythm is press, wait 6 seconds, press again. Triple DoT on long fights, Multi-Shot on multi-target.

A note on WoW Forever Gold: Cargos mentions gold management matters while leveling — weapons, ammo, and skill training all cost coin. But he recommends no third-party gold channels, consistent with Blizzard's hardline stance on RMT during beta. Blizzard has stated that any account involved in generating, selling, buying, or receiving illicit gold may face gold removal, suspension, or permanent bans. Already, high-profile streamers have been penalized for suspicious gold transactions. In Forever, the only safe sources of WoW Forever Gold are normal in-game activities: questing, dungeons, the auction house, and professions.

Weapon Progression: Don't Overinvest

Cargos specifically points out that hunters don't depend on weapon upgrades the way warriors do. You're often threat-capped anyway, and a "good enough" bow is completely fine. Don't go out of your way for weapon upgrades — keep leveling and pushing into the next tier. The key weapons are the STV Master Hunter Bow (obtainable around level 30) and the Maraudon bow, which can carry you into raids.

Final Thoughts

Beast Mastery in Forever is shaping up to be one of its strongest versions ever. Pet scaling reworked, Summon Hawk added, in-combat traps, and a massive expansion of pet abilities give the spec a qualitative leap in both leveling efficiency and overall feel. Cargos' full guide includes 70+ slides, complete weapon progression tables for both factions, skill training lists, and macros — worth checking out for any hunter player.

Launch is November 4, 2026, with beta running through October 21. Blizzard will keep tuning numbers and mechanics until then. Play what you find fun, and let's all learn this new game together.
