Albion Online Ancient Lands Guide: Loot Rules, Rewards & How to Survive

The Ancient Lands combine rewarding PvE encounters with the risk of meeting hostile players. You can pursue Drake loot, collect crafting materials, or spend time fishing, but gathering rewards is only part of the challenge. You also need to leave with them.

Rather than chasing every fight or rushing toward the center, build your run around three decisions: which version to enter, how to control your route, and when your current loot is worth taking home.

🗺️ How to Enter the Ancient Lands

Ancient Lands portals appear in Yellow, Red, and Black Zones. Yellow Zone entrances lead to the partial-loot Orange Zone version, while Red and Black Zone entrances lead to full-loot Ancient Lands. Choose a portal that supports your party size.

Portal Size Supported Party Size Suggested Use

Small

1–5 players

Solo runs and small parties

Medium

5–7 players

Coordinated group runs

Large

15–20 players

Organized large-group content

Small portals do not simply place everyone together. Solo players have their own matchmaking pool, while parties of two to three and four to five enter separate group-size pools.

Small portals remain open for eight minutes after unlocking, while Medium and Large portals remain open for five minutes. Check the live countdown and have your party ready before the entry window begins.

Before leaving town, reserve enough Albion Online Silver for food, potions, repairs, and replacement equipment. Start with a familiar build rather than buying an expensive setup you have not practiced.

🎒 Ancient Lands Loot Rules: What Do You Lose?

In Orange Zone Ancient Lands, your equipped gear is protected. Item Freeze also protects inventory items carried through the entrance, but items acquired inside are not protected and are dropped on death.

Think of your inventory as two separate groups: what you brought and what you earned. The protection on your starting supplies does not make newly collected rewards safe.

Full-loot Ancient Lands are different: both equipped gear and inventory are at risk. Do not apply Orange Zone protection rules to a lethal run.

For your first attempts, use the Orange Zone version to practice objectives and movement. Move into full loot when you can navigate confidently and replace your entire loadout without exhausting your budget.

🗝️ How to Progress Through the Islands

You begin on an outer island. Complete its local objective to obtain a Leygate Keystone, then use that Keystone to activate a connection to another island.

Island quests require defeating 50% of the island’s mobs, excluding Marmots. Quest progress depends on eligible mob kills, not the amount of Fame earned. Non-central island chests also require local quest completion before they unlock.

Watch the objective tracker instead of clearing aimlessly. Once an island is complete, decide whether another nearby objective offers worthwhile rewards or whether moving onward makes more sense.

To unlock the central Fire Drake encounter, complete the quests on all four marked Drake islands. Killing a Drake alone is not the same as completing its island’s objective.

Before advancing, check your health, consumables, cooldowns, and return route. Avoid starting another difficult encounter while you are still recovering from the previous one.

🛡️ How to Survive: Use Leygates to Control Your Route

Read Connections Before Taking Another Fight

Activated Leygate connections are visible on the map. Watching connections appear can help you identify where other players are progressing and whether activity is moving toward your route.

Treat these changes as warning signals, not exact enemy locations. When a nearby connection opens, pause before pulling another large pack. Recover first, check your surroundings, and decide whether you still want to stay.

Know Which Connections You Can Close

Leygates open and close when Keystones are inserted or removed. This gives you control over possible routes, but your escape plan must account for which side holds the Keystone.

Do not assume you can close every gate behind you. Identify the accessible Keystone before relying on that maneuver, and coordinate with teammates so nobody is left on the wrong side.

Keep watching the connections behind you. An opponent can take another route to get ahead of you and cut off your exit, especially if you stay to keep farming after escaping the first encounter.

Leave Before You Need an Emergency Escape

Damage can interrupt your Leygate channel. Do not treat a shield as a guaranteed escape: an opponent may break or purge it, or stop you with crowd control.

Keep a movement or defensive cooldown available when enemies may be nearby. Create distance before channeling, and avoid spending every ability to finish one extra mob.

Most importantly, do not stay simply because you escaped once. After revealing your route, consider leaving instead of giving the same opponent another opportunity.

🎁 What Rewards Can You Get in the Ancient Lands?

Drake Loot and Crafting Materials

Drake encounters and their associated chests offer loot that can include materials or artifacts for Dragonslayer equipment. They provide a clear objective for players who want more than ordinary mob farming.

The Ancient Lands also provide Waystone Fragments, which can be combined into Spirit Waystones at the Artifact Foundry. Fire Drakes can also drop complete Spirit Waystones used to access the Dragon Sanctuary.

Before crafting, compare the material’s sale value with the finished item’s value and crafting costs. Keeping a reward for personal use is reasonable, but crafting it automatically is not always the best choice.

For the next stage, our Albion Online Dragonfire Guide covers Spirit Waystones and Dragon Sanctuary progression.

Ancient Bones and Fame Bonuses

Offer Ancient Bones at Ancient Altars to gain temporary Fame bonuses. Small offerings grant 10% additional Fame for one hour, while large offerings grant 20% for two hours.

These offerings also contribute to Draconic Insight, which unlocks cosmetic rewards.

An Altar stop is particularly useful before a planned Fame-farming session. However, do not risk an already successful run by crossing a dangerous route solely to claim a larger bonus.

Leyfin Fishing

Leyfin fish found in the Ancient Lands are used in healer-focused Omelettes. Bringing a fishing rod gives you another activity when nearby objectives are complete or you decide not to contest the center.

Treat fishing as optional income rather than a guaranteed jackpot. Check actual market prices before planning around a particular catch. Leyfin can also appear in Laborer Journal rewards, so avoid assuming Ancient Lands fishing is their only source.

🚪 When and How to Leave the Ancient Lands

You do not need to defeat the final boss to leave. Any entry portal on the outer islands returns you to the open-world region where you originally entered. Defeating the central Fire Drake also opens an exit portal.

Set your exit conditions before entering. For a learning run, completing several islands and returning successfully is a useful goal. For a farming run, consider leaving when you secure a valuable drop, your supplies run low, or hostile activity threatens your return route.

Give yourself a time buffer instead of waiting until the final moments. You may need to retrace connections, avoid another player, or recover before moving again.

After returning to safety, bank your loot before preparing the next run. Track what you actually keep after consumables, repairs, and losses, not just the estimated value you saw inside. Use those results to decide whether your next run should be longer, more cautious, or focused on a different objective.
