Heading into the City of Dalaran? Knowing where to enter is only the beginning. This guide explains which quests to collect, how to navigate the dungeon, what to do during dangerous boss abilities, and which rewards deserve a repeat run.

The October 8 beta update opened City of Dalaran and increased experience from killing dungeon creatures by approximately 20%. That increase applies to creature kills—not every quest reward.

Running short on gold for repairs, consumables, or useful gear upgrades? You can buy WoW Forever gold to help cover these costs. Check the loot targets below before spending heavily on equipment you may replace in the dungeon.

🚪 How to Enter and Get the Dalaran Sewer Key

Dalaran is in the Alterac Mountains. Alliance players approach from Hillsbrad and enter through the city sewers; Horde use the exterior sewer tunnel beside Lordamere Lake. One keyholder can open the gate for others.

For the lakeside approach, a player-documented entrance marker is 69.2, 45.6 on the Silverpine Forest map.

Horde: Finish Wordeen’s Access Chain

Start with Magus Wordeen Voidglare in Tarren Mill:

Prison Break In + Key to the City: Recover the four Bloodstone artifacts from traitors at Lordamere Internment Camp and obtain the Grimy Key. Player reports locate the key on the ground floor of a two-story building in the camp. Return both quests to Wordeen.

Dalaran Patrols: Defeat the Summoners and Elemental Slaves outside Dalaran, then return to Wordeen. The current quest record lists six Summoners and eight Slaves, rather than twelve Slaves in the overview guide; follow your live quest log.

Blood in the Streets → Heart of Disruption: Find the image of Archmage Modera beside the lakeside sewer entrance. Hand in Blood in the Streets and accept Heart of Disruption.

Accepting Heart of Disruption provides the usable Dalaran Sewer Key. The Grimy Key cannot bypass Modera’s wards; you do not need to finish the dungeon first.

Alliance: Speak to Modera

Pick up An Alarming Request from Emissary Jacques in Southshore’s town hall, then report to Modera. Accept the Alliance version of Heart of Disruption to receive the sewer key. You do not follow the Horde’s Tarren Mill chain.

📜 Complete Quests Without Backtracking

Collect these before entering. The listed NPC also receives the completed quest.

Quest

Pickup and turn-in

Required action

The Grave Knight — Horde

Melisara, Tarren Mill

Defeat Atrexis the Grave Knight in the sewers.

Source of Power — Horde

Doctor Martin Felben, Undercity

Loot six Cracked Sentry Cores from constructs. Check your own total before leaving.

Power Overwhelming — Alliance

High Sorcerer Andromath, Stormwind

Kill Arcanic Enigma: this is the quest’s “Mana Elemental.”

A Green Sample — Alliance

Shylamiir, Stormwind’s Park

Collect a Fel-infused Blossom from the central garden.

Horde: Opportunistic Education. Accept it from Rexxie Copperclutch near the sewer entrance. Collect The Founding of Dalaran from the library’s back wall beyond the portal-room area, then return to Rexxie.

Also check Modera for Starving Arcane. It requires eight Seeking Remnants, eight Saturated Remnants, and eight Mana Echoes inside the dungeon. Return to Modera outside Dalaran afterward. Check all three counters rather than assuming a boss clear completes them.

Both factions: Heart of Disruption. Loot the Arcane Mote from Shade of the Archmage. Alliance returns it to Image of Archmage Modera; Horde returns it to Wordeen in Tarren Mill.

⚔️ How to Beat Dalaran Dungeon Bosses

🗺️ Follow the Boss Landmarks

Start with Atrexis in the central sewers. Above ground, use these landmarks: Arcane Anomaly—Krasus’ Landing; Mana Devourer—Violet Hold; Unstable Sentinel—Magus Commerce Exchange; Arcanic Enigma—Path of Renewal. After surrounding encounters, check the central NPCs for Fel Ancient’s barrier. The tower NPC opens the portal toward Shade of the Archmage.

Change spells when “Immune” appears. Several enemies are Arcane-immune, while some trees are Nature-immune. Keep another damage school available rather than repeating ineffective casts.

⚔️ Handle the Mechanics That Cause Wipes

Atrexis and Mana Devourer

Atrexis: Let the tank establish threat on summoned skeletons before using area damage. Tanks should be ready for Disarm rather than relying entirely on uninterrupted weapon attacks.

Mana Devourer: Clear nearby enemies and drink to full before pulling. Debilitate drains Mana across a 45-yard area, so normal healing range does not avoid it. Use offensive cooldowns early while the group still has resources; save tank defensives for dangerous damage spikes.

React to These Boss Abilities

Boss

Warning

What to do

Arcane Anomaly

Rotating Focal Blast

Move ahead of the counterclockwise beam. Stay inside the platform circle to avoid additional enemies.

Arcanic Enigma

Two Mana Phantoms, then Manamorph

Kill the Phantoms first to stop their Mana Burn. Dispel Manamorph with Magic removal; keep the healer away from the boss’s nearby Silence.

Unstable Sentinel

Malfunction begins casting

Clear nearby Angry Tomes before pulling. Melee run out during the two-second warning; ranged and healer stay beyond 25 yards.

Fel Ancient

Entangle overlaps Fel Timbers

Use an available root break or call for Freedom, then leave the green ground effect immediately.

Shade of the Archmage: Dodge the Return Trip

Bounding Mana travels outward and returns. Sidestep its path and wait for both passes before moving back. Spread out so one projectile does not cross several players.

Keep ranged players beyond 20 yards for Arcane Explosion. When the boss runs out of Mana, expect Mass Polymorph followed by Evocation. Stay inside the room: pulling the boss outside resets the encounter.

🧵 Farm Specific Loot Targets

Target

Boss

Why to check it

Blueprint: Spinning Wheel

Unstable Sentinel

Requires 140 Tailoring and teaches campsite Spinning Wheel placement. It is a blueprint, not an already placed facility.

Spine of the Devourer

Mana Devourer

Level 28 staff with 14 Stamina, 3 Spell Penetration, and up to 36 spell damage/healing. Compare it against your complete weapon setup.

Check current reward tooltips before choosing quest gear: some dungeon rewards have received rarity and stat adjustments.

📖 Summon Lyn the Ignored

Player-documented summoning method:

Take the Black Tome from the table behind Archmage Arugal in Shadowfang Keep.

Use it beside the Ambermill Leyline Focus in Silverpine’s Ambermill town hall to obtain the Tome of Dalaran.

Bring the converted tome into Dalaran’s dungeon. Clear the sewer room containing the purple ritual circle, then use it there to summon Lyn.

Bring curse removal. Curse of Thorns can damage players when they attack; remove it promptly, particularly from melee attackers. Without a dispeller, pause attacks when the extra damage threatens your survival.
