The Chinese mobile version of Final Fantasy XIV has rolled out its 2.1.0 update. This update introduces several exciting features and gameplay additions, ranging from classic primal battles to innovative cosmetic systems. Most notably, it debuts the first-ever customizable mount in the history of Final Fantasy XIV. Let’s get into the details.

Classic Encounters and PvP

The update highlights familiar encounters for longtime FFXIV fans, including Good King Moggle Mog, Leviathan, and Ramuh. In addition, PvP has been added to the mobile version—an impressive inclusion that expands gameplay variety.

The First Customizable Mount

Alongside the new content, the update also expands the game’s cash shop. The most notable addition is the first-ever customizable mount in Final Fantasy XIV.

 The First Customizable Mount

This mount takes the form of a hoverboard, similar in style to the Cosmoboard, but redesigned with sleek jetboard aesthetics. It comes with unique animations, including an action button that lets players perform flips and tricks. Most importantly, it is a dyeable mount—a feature players have requested for years in the global version of the game. Unlike chocobo color changes that require a tedious feeding system, this mount supports a straightforward “apply dye from inventory” system, similar to how glamour works.

Notably, beyond the hoverboard, the mobile version also features an exclusive Penguin mount, which is tied to Lightseed’s branding, with characters hopping into its pouch.

BTW, if you want to collect mounts and minions in the main game, you can buy FFXIV items at MmoGah, which has fast delivery and secure transactions.

New Cosmetics – Hairstyles

The update also debuts brand-new long hairstyles. These hairstyles offer two-tone coloring and even toggleable adornments, giving players a level of customization not available in the global client.

Interestingly, the mobile version also incorporates a gacha system for hairstyles. Players can spend premium currency to spin for rare styles, including elaborate long hairstyles with unique bangs, accessories, and two-tone dye options.

A Look at the Cash Shop

Diving deeper into the mobile cash shop reveals a blend of familiar and exclusive items. Outfits that are typically earned with MGP in the global version—such as the Gambler’s Attire—are locked behind real-money purchases here. Sets like the Fat Cat attire and High House Bustle are also available.

One standout feature is that many outfits include toggleable components, allowing players to swap between boots and sandals or adjust layers like underskirts. Hairstyles also feature toggleable accessories, giving unprecedented flexibility compared to the global version.

While this level of customization is exciting, it’s clear that the mobile version leans heavily into pay-to-glamour microtransactions. Thankfully, these are not pay-to-win mechanics, but they do show how monetization is structured differently for mobile audiences.

Final Thoughts

The Chinese Final Fantasy XIV mobile update 2.1.0 is both exciting and frustrating for global fans. On one hand, it introduces groundbreaking features like the first dyeable mount, toggleable outfits, and hairstyle customization—things players have wanted in the PC/console version for years. On the other hand, many items available through gameplay in the global client are monetized in the mobile version.

Regardless, it’s clear that Lightseed Studios understands its audience and is willing to experiment with features fans desire. The question remains: Will Square Enix take inspiration from the mobile version and bring these innovations to the global client? Many players are hoping the answer is yes.
