Stop Farming Wrong! PoE 3.29 Best Farming Strategies & New Money-Makers

Path of Exile 3.29 "Curse of the Allflame" is one of the most disruptive endgame updates in years. GGG did not just tweak numbers; they reworked two pillar mechanics (Legion and Abyss), removed Incubators entirely, locked core uniques behind specific content, modernized sockets, and added Atlas Anomalies as a wildcard layer. For anyone asking "what is the best farm in 3.29?", the honest answer is: there is no single king yet—but Legion, Strongboxes, Harvest, Abyss, and Expedition are all standing on very different ground than they were in 3.28.

This deep dive breaks down what got nerfed, changed, or buffed, which strats look promising for league start and late league, and how the patch notes actually reshape your Atlas decisions.

1. What Got Nerfed, Changed, or Buffed

Nerfs and Removals

  • Incubators are dead. Rog no longer applies them, Heist trinkets no longer duplicate splinters, and the Stash Tab Affinity for Incubators is gone. Legion's old passive economy (chest/monster duplicate splinter chance) was stripped from Logistical Support and Pillaged Treasures.
  • Timeless Splinters are more concentrated but less sprawling. Non-Sergeant, non-General Legion monsters no longer drop splinters. Sergeants and chests drop fewer but bigger stacks, and PoE Map Item Quantity matters less for splinter drops. The Emblematic passive chance to upgrade splinters to Emblems was halved (0.6% → 0.3%).
  • Unrelenting Timeless Emblems removed—their effects are folded into regular Emblems, making Domain runs slightly less swingy but also less of a printer.
  • Reflecting Mists and Nameless Seer no longer spawn in regular maps. They migrate to Atlas Anomalies instead, so passive "free scry" luck is gone from the baseline loop.
  • Mirage-dependent scaling is gone (Mirage was 3.28). Breach and Unstable Breach-style farms that leaned on Mirage multipliers lose roughly half their ceiling.

Buffs and Systemic Changes

  • Legion rework = smoother and more rewarding for casual clears. You no longer need to kill every monster; breaking out all key monsters, chests, and the majority of regular monsters starts the encounter. Generals drop more splinters on average. New Enshrouding Crystals let you turn a Unique Armour into an "Enshrouded" item, charge it in the Domain of Timeless Conflict, and output a Vestigial Unique with a weakened version of the original signature mod as an implicit. That is a brand-new PoE currency sink and chase item.
  • Abyss modernized (PoE 2-style). Pits are pre-opened, static, and spawn Abyssal enemies immediately. Closing pits scales monster count (+4% per prior pit). Abyssal Jewels and Stygian Vises are now exclusive to Abyss (no more random chest drops). New Abyss scarabs, reworked Atlas nodes, and a new Pinnacle Boss (Zorath, via "Zorath's Eye of Malevolence") make Abyss a real loot island.
  • Strongboxes: no direct rework, but the removal of Mirage slightly lowers secondary scaling. However, box consistency is untouched, and with reflect removed from maps, box-mod monster packs are safer to pop.
  • Harvest: kept its 3.28 buffs (Lifeforce gamble crafts, Astrolabe conversion). No nerf in notes. Still one of the most liquid currency engines.
  • Talismans are now Bestiary-exclusive, uncorrupted, with implicit → enchantment modifiers (+1 skill gems, +max power charge, action speed). Eyes of the Greatwolf reworked to scale enchantment magnitude. This indirectly buffs Bestiary as a side-farm.
  • Sockets QoL: items default to white sockets; chromes guarantee at least one R/G/B; matching socket+gem color gives +10% gem quality. This is not a farm change directly, but it lowers gear cost for every farming build, especially self-cast (which GGG explicitly mentioned buffing).
  • Atlas Anomalies: completing a Voidstone-affected map can manifest an Anomaly (Reflecting Mists, Nameless Seer scrying, revealed Heist wing, Sacred Grove gamble, extra Strongbox, etc.) at the Atlas edge. These ignore your Atlas passives, so they are pure bonus variance.

2. Promising Starting Strats (League Start → Mid League)

A. Legion (Top Early Pick)

Why it wins early: huge monster count, low setup cost (Legion Scarab + Eternal Conflict + Treasures), fast XP, and now a cleaner trigger condition. You do not need to full-clear; you need AoE chains or explode-on-kill. The Enshrouding Crystal economy is fresh, so early Vestigial Uniques will be speculative but tradable. Expect strong competition week 1, but the floor (splinters, emblems, raw currency from chests) is intact.

Atlas tree: Legion cluster + Emblematic + pack size + block non-target mechanics.

Build fit: Lightning Conduit, Explode Totems, Frostblink traps, any screen-clear.

B. Strongboxes (Safest Consistency Farm)

No rework, no reflect deaths, linear profit. Boxes scale with rarity/quantity and scarabs (Ambush, Potency, Divination). Works on a 2–3 div build. Best when you do not trust the new Legion crystal market yet. Pair with "block all other mechanics" precision farming and you get a brain-off 20-map loop.

Weakness: less explosive than Legion on a lucky map, and scarab price swings matter more.

C. Harvest (Liquid Currency, Low Stress)

Still converts Lifeforce into div cards, Astrolabes, and gamble rolls. With self-cast buffs, many Harvest-friendly builds (Poison, Minion, Brand) also got indirect help. Harvest of Doubling + Cornucopia remains the gold standard. If you want "1–2 div/hour without praying to RNGesus," this is the bench.

D. Abyss (Sleeper A-Tier)

Do not sleep on it. Exclusivity of Stygian Vises + Abyssal Jewels means early demand is artificial-scarcity-driven. The PoE2-style pit flow is faster than old snake-Abyss. Zorath pinnacle uniques will be pricey day 3–10. Risk: you must learn pit-closing routes; bad clear builds will hate it.

E. Expedition / Essence (Budget Backups)

Expedition unchanged → same logbook math as 3.28. Essence is the classic league-start ladder: deterministic, no scarab dependency, sells instantly. Not top ceiling, but zero setup risk.

F. Atlas Anomalies (Wildcard Layer)

Not a main strat, but every Voidstone map you run has a tail chance to spawn one. Treat them as lottery tickets: a Sacred Grove gamble anomaly or Nameless Seer scry can equal a full Legion map's profit.

3. How Changes Affect Farming Decisions

  • Specialization beats generalization. With Abyssal items locked to Abyss and Legion producing a new crystal sink, GGG is pushing "each mechanic funds itself." Precision farming (one quadrant, one mechanic, block the rest) is stronger than ever because cross-mechanic spillover loot is reduced.
  • Splinter farming is now General-killing, not mob-vacuuming. Legion farmers must prioritize General markers, not screen-wide tag clears.
  • Reflect gone from maps + socket QoL = AoE self-cast returns. Expect VFoS, Lightning Spell Totems, and self-cast BV to dominate farm builds, which feeds back into Legion/Abyss/Strongbox viability.
  • Incubator removal kills a chunk of passive income that previously subsidized bad maps. You must pick a real strat now; "I'll just incubator it" is gone.
  • Anomalies decouple luck from tree investment. A player with a minimal tree can still hit a Nameless Seer anomaly. This slightly flattens the gap between optimized farmers and casual red-map runners.

What Wins the "Best Farm" Title in 3.29?

It will depend on three variables:

  1. Enshrouding Crystal market depth – if Vestigial Uniques prove build-defining, Legion overtakes everything by week 2.
  2. Abyss exclusivity tax – if Stygian Vises stay only-from-Abyss, Abyss scarabs and maps spike, making Abyss the early div printer.
  3. Harvest floor vs. Legion ceiling – Harvest is the safe "always profitable" answer; Legion is the high-roll answer.

My projected tier list for 3.29 currency/hr (early → late):

  • Week 1: Legion ≈ Strongbox > Harvest > Abyss > Expedition
  • Week 3+: Legion (if crystals pop) > Abyss (if vises hold) > Harvest > Strongbox > Essence
  • Comfort pick: Harvest or Strongbox if you hate variance.

Closing Advice

Do not over-commit your Atlas tree on day 1. Rush Voidstones, grab one Shaped Region, run Legion + Strongbox hybrid (Legion scarab primary, boxes left open) for the first 2–3 days to fund scarabs, then pivot hard into whichever of Legion/Abyss/Harvest the market rewards. Watch Enshrouding Crystal prices—they are the true signal for where 3.29's wealth concentrates.

Curse of the Allflame did not kill old farms; it re-priced them. The players who read the patch notes instead of last league's tier list will own the economy.
