Look for those towering rock spires (rock spines) on the map — circle around one and you'll almost always find a cave entrance. Step inside, light a torch, and you'll spot yellowish metal nodes just a few steps in. A basic Stone Pickaxe is all you need to mine them. A couple of spires near the starting area are more than enough for early-game needs — no need to wander the whole map.
