Nightmare Dungeons are usually treated as a standard XP activity, but in Diablo 4 Season 13, the right War Plan setup can turn them into a repeatable farming loop for XP, loot, Whisper Caches, and Corrupted Roots.
This method focuses on combining Corrupted Roots, Headrotten boss spawns, Shrine interactions, and Nightmare Dungeon War Plan nodes. When the setup works properly, you can create extra boss-style encounters, collect multiple Whisper Caches, and keep the loop going without constantly refarming Corrupted Roots.
Required War Plan Setup
Before starting this farm, you need several key War Plan nodes to make the loop work properly. These nodes are what allow Corrupted Roots, Headrotten bosses, Whisper Caches, and shrine spawns to connect into one repeatable XP farming method.
First, unlock the Corrupted Roots node from the Tree of Whispers section. This node is essential because the farm begins by opening Corrupted Roots. Prepare around 20–30 Corrupted Roots before starting. Once the loop is running, you usually will not need to farm them again, because Whisper Caches will continuously replenish them.
Next, take Roots of Power and Headrotten Feast. Headrotten Feast is especially important because it gives Corrupted Roots a chance to spawn a Headrotten boss when opened. Without this node, the core boss-spawning part of the method will not work.
You should also take Tree of Plenty and Wisdom of Whisperers. Wisdom of Whisperers is one of the most important XP nodes because it allows Whisper Caches to drop extra experience orbs. Since this farm creates multiple Headrotten boss kills, Whisper Caches become the main source of XP.
From the Nightmare Dungeon section, take Dread Revival. This node gives killed bosses a chance to respawn with extra loot, helping you maintain more boss interactions during the farm.
Finally, take Nemesis. Normally, this node causes elites to appear when shrines are activated. However, with this setup, Nemesis can be manipulated to spawn multiple copies of the Headrotten boss instead, which is the main reason this farm generates so much XP and loot.
How to Farm XP in Nightmare Dungeons
Step 1: Find the Right Nightmare Dungeon
Start by running multiple War Plans, prioritizing Nightmare Dungeons during those War Plans. Once a dungeon is open, teleport to it using the map. Inside, check the dungeon map for shrine affixes, such as Protection Shrine or Artillery Shrine, which are crucial for this farm.
If the dungeon lacks a shrine affix, complete it and continue with War Plans until you find a suitable one. Keep in mind that Nightmare Dungeons opened via Sigils are not efficient for this farm, so focus on the ones from War Plans.
Step 2: Clear the Dungeon and Spawn a Headrotten Boss
Inside the dungeon, kill every enemy except the boss. A Subo Mercenary is very helpful here because it reveals all enemies on the map. Do not activate any shrines yet.
Next, use Corrupted Roots to attempt to spawn a Headrotten boss. The spawn chance is roughly 25%, so it may take several attempts. If only weak or elite zombies appear, kill them and try again.
Corrupted Roots have a 1-minute cooldown, but you can bypass it by teleporting back to town and re-entering the dungeon. Bring multiple Corrupted Roots, as boss spawns are not guaranteed. Once a boss appears, kill all other enemies but leave the boss alive, then teleport back to town and re-enter the dungeon to reset the monster pool for shrine activation.
Step 3: Reset the Monster Pool and Activate Shrines
After resetting, kill the Headrotten boss and loot if needed. Due to the Dread Revival node in your War Plans, the boss may revive, adding extra opportunities for loot.
Approach a shrine and activate it. Thanks to the Nemesis node, this will spawn 1–7 copies of the boss, each dropping loot, including a guaranteed Whisper Cache with experience orbs and more Corrupted Roots.
Immediately move to the second and third shrines and repeat the process—waiting is unnecessary because boss spawns do not stack once shrine effects dissipate. By the end of the run, you will have accumulated multiple Whisper Caches, granting massive XP and replenishing Corrupted Roots for the next loop.
Step 4: Collect Caches, Reset, and Repeat
Once the shrines are cleared, return to town and reset the Nightmare Dungeon to start a new loop. This method allows fast, repeatable XP farming, keeping your characters consistently leveled.
Additionally, there is a small chance to obtain a Resplendent Spark from Whisper Caches if you took the final War Plan node, which may be especially relevant in Season 14.
By following this loop, you can continuously farm XP, loot, and Corrupted Roots in a fun and efficient way, making it one of the most effective endgame D4 leveling methods.
