Modern Warfare 4 DMZ brings the Call of Duty extraction experience back with a new map, deeper progression, expanded crafting, and even more dangerous encounters.

First introduced with Modern Warfare 2 in 2022, DMZ returns in a significantly reworked form. The new version combines familiar extraction-shooter elements with persistent Operators, resource gathering, crafting, social features, and large-scale combat zones. Players looking for an alternative to games such as ARC Raiders or Marathon may find plenty to explore here.

From the release date and supported platforms to PvP, extraction, progression, and the new crafting systems, here’s what to know about MW4 DMZ.

When Does Modern Warfare 4 DMZ Release?

Modern Warfare 4 DMZ launches on October 23, 2026, the same day as the full Modern Warfare 4 release.

The mode arrives as part of the game’s launch lineup alongside the campaign, multiplayer, and Warzone-related content. There is no need to wait for a later seasonal update to access DMZ, as the extraction mode will be available from day one.

Is Modern Warfare 4 DMZ Free to Play?

No. Modern Warfare 4 DMZ is not a standalone free-to-play mode.

The original DMZ launched alongside Warzone as a free experience connected to Modern Warfare 2. The new version takes a different approach. Players need to own Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 to enter DMZ.

Free access periods could potentially appear during future events or seasonal promotions, but the standard version of DMZ requires ownership of the main game.

What Is DMZ in Modern Warfare 4?

DMZ is an extraction shooter where players enter a dangerous combat zone, complete objectives, collect resources, fight enemies, and attempt to escape with their rewards.

The basic idea is simple: enter with equipment, search the map for valuable loot, complete missions, and extract before things go wrong. Other players and AI-controlled enemies can both become threats, so every deployment involves a certain amount of risk.

The extraction format will feel familiar to players who have tried games such as Escape from Tarkov, ARC Raiders, or Marathon. Valuable equipment can be taken out of the zone and used for future progression, but failing to extract can cost valuable resources.

The original DMZ arrived in 2022 with Modern Warfare 2 and featured contracts, faction missions, enemy strongholds, hidden caches, and encounters with other players. Its main setting was Al Mazrah, which provided a large open environment filled with activities and loot locations.

Modern Warfare 4’s version keeps the extraction foundation but rebuilds many of its systems from the ground up.

Modern Warfare 4 DMZ Platforms

Modern Warfare 4 DMZ is coming to:

• PC

• PlayStation 5

• Xbox Series X|S

• Nintendo Switch 2

The game is designed for the current generation, meaning PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are not supported. The original Nintendo Switch is also excluded from the lineup.

PC players may also be interested in portable gaming hardware. Performance on handheld PCs will depend on the final optimization and hardware configuration, but devices capable of running demanding modern PC games could provide another way to experience DMZ away from a desktop.

Does Modern Warfare 4 DMZ Have PvP?

Yes. PvP is a major part of the Modern Warfare 4 DMZ experience.

Players aren’t simply fighting AI enemies while searching for loot. Other squads are also operating in Hajin, which means an apparently routine mission can turn into a firefight at any moment.

However, MW4 DMZ adds a system designed to discourage players from eliminating everyone they encounter. Repeatedly taking down other Operators increases notoriety, putting a larger bounty on the aggressive player’s head.

Higher notoriety makes an Operator more exposed and gives other players a stronger reason to hunt them. The system effectively creates a risk-versus-reward loop: aggressive players can earn rewards and build a reputation, but they also become increasingly attractive targets.

Bounty Hunting and Dog Tags

The notoriety system works in both directions.

Players interested in hunting high-value targets can collect dog tags from defeated Operators. Successfully extracting with them can provide a significant payout while also helping reduce the hunter’s own notoriety.

This creates different ways to approach a deployment. One squad may avoid unnecessary fights and concentrate on objectives, while another may deliberately track down other Operators for valuable rewards.

Proximity Chat

Communication is another important part of DMZ. Proximity chat allows nearby players to hear and communicate with each other.

That can lead to temporary alliances, tense negotiations, warnings, deception, or sudden betrayals. Players can also mute or disable communication when necessary.

Modern Warfare 4 further improves proximity audio with several environmental features:

• Distance-Based Vocal Falloff: Voices become quieter as the speaker moves farther away.

• Directional Audio: Sound positioning makes it easier to determine where another player is speaking from.

• Environmental Reverb: Voices react to surrounding structures, helping indicate whether someone is indoors, outdoors, or near particular buildings.

In a game where hearing another squad before seeing them can make the difference between extraction and elimination, audio awareness becomes an important survival tool.

Modern Warfare 4 DMZ Map

The main DMZ battlefield is Hajin, one of the largest environments featured in Call of Duty.

Located around a contested region near Russia and the Korean Peninsula, Hajin has become a valuable target because abandoned military technology remains scattered throughout the area. Multiple factions are competing to control these resources, turning the region into a dangerous exclusion zone.

The map isn’t simply a large open space. Different areas offer different opportunities and risks, while hidden locations and environmental details provide additional reasons to explore away from the obvious routes.

Hajin also features dynamic weather that can alter how a deployment plays out. Heavy rain can reduce visibility, while fog and cloudy conditions can make familiar locations more difficult to navigate.

Notable locations include:

• Fallout reactor

• Prison complex

• Ruins of Hajin City

• Military base

• Hidden areas containing valuable resources and equipment

Because conditions can change between deployments, the safest route during one match may not remain the best option during another.

Modern Warfare 4 DMZ Progression

Progression is one of the biggest changes in MW4 DMZ.

Instead of treating each match as an isolated experience, the mode gives players multiple systems that carry progress between deployments. Resources, Operators, crafting upgrades, equipment, and other rewards all contribute to longer-term development.

Forward Operating Base

The Forward Operating Base (FOB) serves as the central headquarters between deployments.

Players return here to prepare for their next operation, manage stored resources, purchase equipment, and work with the mode’s crafting systems.

The FOB includes several useful facilities, including:

• 3D Printer for crafting

• Stash for storing resources and equipment

• Weapons and equipment services

• Firing range

• Bounty boards

• Additional upgrade systems

New services and improvements can become available as progression continues.

The FOB also provides a social and preparation space where squads can organize their equipment and decide what to tackle next.

Active Duty Operators

MW4 DMZ brings back the Active Duty Operator concept.

Players can maintain multiple Operators, with each one developing separately. Operators can carry persistent equipment and backpacks between deployments, allowing different characters to be prepared for different situations.

The Trait System adds another layer of customization.

As an Operator gains experience, Trait Points can be invested into areas such as combat, scavenging, and utility. This makes it possible to develop specialized Operators for different roles.

For example, one Operator could focus on PvP combat, while another is built around exploration, resource gathering, infiltration, or carrying large amounts of loot.

Because each Operator progresses independently, losing one does not necessarily mean losing the entire account’s progression.

Looting in DMZ

Loot is at the heart of every DMZ deployment.

Hajin contains a wide variety of resources, equipment, and crafting materials. Some materials are relatively common, while rarer components are needed for higher-level crafting recipes.

Successful looting can provide access to:

• Killstreaks

• Improved Plate Carriers

• Specialized Backpacks

• Crafting materials

• Rare equipment

• Resources needed for advanced recipes

Loot distribution also reflects the location being searched.

A police station may contain tactical equipment and combat-related supplies, while a hospital is more likely to provide medical resources. Residential areas can contain general materials and scavenged items.

Learning where particular resources tend to appear can therefore make future deployments much more efficient.

Crafting System

Crafting gives collected materials a purpose beyond simply selling or storing them.

Resources recovered during a deployment can be converted into equipment and other useful items. The game also automatically breaks down certain collected materials while players are in the field, reducing some of the inventory-management workload.

After successfully extracting, resources can be used at the FOB’s 3D Printer.

Upgrading the printer gradually opens additional recipes and allows players to create more advanced equipment.

The 3D Printer can be used for several categories of items, including:

• Gear: Utility equipment such as night-vision goggles and parachutes.

• Backpacks: Storage equipment with different capacities and specialized functions.

• Plate Carriers: Various armor configurations.

• Tacticals: Non-lethal tools designed to provide tactical advantages.

• Lethals: Offensive equipment used against enemies.

• Consumables: Items such as painkillers and radiation blockers.

• Field Upgrades: Tactical and intelligence-oriented equipment that does not recharge as it does in Multiplayer.

• Fire Support Items: Deployable support assets and killstreak-style equipment.

• Tracked Recipes: Pinned recipes that make it easier to identify required materials.

• Special Items: Unique objects with specific gameplay purposes.

Exploring deeper into Hajin and finding uncommon resources becomes increasingly important as more powerful crafting recipes become available.

Weapon Condition

Weapons found during deployments aren’t necessarily in perfect condition.

Players can discover damaged firearms throughout Hajin and extract them for later use. Some weapons may have broken or missing attachments, damaged optics, unstable components, or signs of improvised field repairs.

These conditions can affect both the appearance and performance of a weapon.

The game also includes distinctive weapon variants featuring specialized attachments and unique CoD MW4 camouflage, giving players additional reasons to search beyond standard equipment.

Extraction

Getting into Hajin is only half the job. Getting out is where the real tension begins.

Players can escape the exclusion zone using methods such as helicopters and skyhooks. Reaching an extraction point does not guarantee safety, however.

Other squads may be heading toward the same area, and the final moments of a deployment can quickly become chaotic. A team might have to fight its way to an extraction point, protect a wounded teammate, or make a desperate escape while running low on ammunition.

The closer a squad gets to extraction, the more valuable survival becomes.

MIA System

Failure doesn’t always mean losing everything.

The MIA System gives teammates an opportunity to rescue an eliminated Operator by spending in-game cash. Successfully bringing a teammate back can preserve their progression instead of forcing them to rebuild everything from the beginning.

This provides squads with another strategic option after a teammate goes down. Rather than immediately accepting the loss, surviving players can decide whether rescuing the missing Operator is worth the cost.

Tourniquet

Combat injuries are another consideration during a deployment.

Players can equip a Tourniquet to help manage severe wounds and increase their chances of surviving after taking serious damage. However, it isn’t a replacement for proper medical supplies.

The item can buy valuable time, but staying alive still requires careful management of health and other resources.

Ranking Up and Long-Term Progression

Every deployment contributes to the larger progression system.

Successful extractions allow players to retain valuable equipment, resources, and rewards, while failed operations can result in significant setbacks. Even unsuccessful runs can still contribute XP and other forms of progression.

This makes preparation extremely important. Choosing the right Operator, equipment, route, and objectives can have a major impact on how much a squad gets out of each deployment.

In other words, DMZ isn’t simply about winning individual firefights. Knowing when to fight, when to loot, and when to leave can be just as important.

Modern Warfare 4 DMZ Story

The events of the Modern Warfare 4 campaign set the stage for DMZ’s storyline.

After the campaign, a large exclusion zone remains across the Korean Peninsula. Abandoned military technology, weapons, valuable resources, and new threats are scattered throughout the region.

Players take on the role of a covert CIA operative sent behind enemy lines. The objective is to secure valuable resources before hostile factions or other forces can claim them.

The mission becomes increasingly complicated as hostile AI forces and rival Operators occupy the same territory. Every deployment can therefore force players to make difficult decisions: avoid the conflict, work with another squad temporarily, or engage and take the rewards for themselves.

Final Thoughts

Modern Warfare 4 DMZ takes the extraction-shooter foundation of the original DMZ and expands it with a much deeper progression system.

The combination of persistent Operators, the FOB, crafting, weapon condition, dynamic weather, PvP bounties, proximity chat, and multiple extraction options gives each deployment more consequences. Hajin also provides a large environment where exploration and resource management can be just as important as gun skill.

For players who enjoy the tension of entering a dangerous zone, building up valuable gear, and trying to escape before everything falls apart, MW4 DMZ could become one of the most interesting additions to the Modern Warfare 4 package.
