Where WoW Forever's New Zones Fit on the Vanilla Map

The World of Warcraft Forever beta has finally pulled back the curtain on something classic players have wondered about for two decades: what actually lies in those unfinished, inaccessible stretches of the vanilla map? From Shen'Dralas stretching south of Desolace, to the massive "unfinished patch" of Riverglades on the Eastern Kingdoms coast, to Mount Hyjal and the Skyborn homeland of Zephyrus Isle — Blizzard's design philosophy here is clear: don't remake classic, complete it.

New Zones Fit

This breakdown walks through exactly where each of the four new launch zones sits on the vanilla map, and what it could mean for the World of Warcraft Forever Gold economy.

🗺️ Zone One: Shen'Dralas — Desolace's Southern Continuation

📍 Location: Kalimdor, south of Desolace, beyond the Valley of Bones, north of Dire Maul.
On the vanilla map, the road south from Desolace simply stops at the Valley of Bones — the skeleton-filled area tied to the Scarlet Monastery pre-quest. South of that point lies a patchwork of rectangular terrain blocks in mismatched colors, with harsh, unblended borders. It was never accessible.

WoW Forever activates this space as Shen'Dralas, positioned as a direct narrative continuation of Desolace built around the centaur factions. Players will push through the Valley of Bones and follow a newly opened path south into the zone.

Small hope: those two giant skeleton corpses lying on the ground in the Valley of Bones are iconic vanilla scenery. Fingers crossed they survive the transition.

Economic impact: Shen'Dralas likely covers the level 35–40 range, filling the gap between Desolace and the Badlands. New quest lines mean new sources of World of Warcraft Forever Gold — and in a version with no WoW Token, mid-level quest zones like this are a primary way players build early wealth.

🌊 Zone Two: Riverglades — The Biggest Terrain Patch on the Eastern Kingdoms

📍 Location: Eastern Kingdoms coastline, sandwiched between the Badlands, Burning Steppes, and Redridge to the south.

This is the single largest unfinished area on the vanilla map. In classic, the elevation work was partially done — there are rolling hills — but huge sections are perfectly flat, using single-color textures with harsh straight-line borders.

Look north from Redridge or east from the Burning Steppes, and you can see it: a chunk of forgotten land hidden behind hills, completely inaccessible.

The key comparison: in retail's Cataclysm version, Blizzard simply pulled the coastline inward and deleted the whole area. But in Forever's alternate timeline, it survives as Riverglades.

Geographically, it sits perfectly to become a mid-level transition zone linking Redridge, the Burning Steppes, and the Badlands — potentially a strong leveling route for Alliance players in the 30–40 bracket.

🌳 Zone Three: Mount Hyjal — Finally Walkable

📍 Location: Northern Kalimdor, west of Winterspring, north of Felwood.

Mount Hyjal has always existed on the vanilla map — technically inaccessible, but largely built out. Explorers have been sneaking in since launch.

WoW Forever finally makes it official. One slight disappointment: the playable area appears to match the vanilla version, meaning that giant brown mountain on Hyjal's southern side — one of the strangest features on the entire Kalimdor map — may go unused.

The exciting part: trailer footage suggests the World Tree and Archimonde's giant skeleton embedded in it have been dramatically scaled up. And vanilla Hyjal famously contains a complete replica of Onyxia's Lair — whether that gets repurposed remains to be seen.

Why it matters: Hyjal is a Warcraft III landmark. Exploring it in vanilla-timeline form is pure nostalgia fuel, likely tied to quests involving the World Tree and remnants of the Burning Legion.

🏝️ Zone Four: Zephyrus Isle — The Skyborn Homeland

📍Location: Not on Azeroth — likely in the Elemental Plane.

This is the only zone built entirely from scratch, serving as the starting area for the new Skyborn race.

The lore: these elves fled the area near Dire Maul, sailed west, and found a distant island. But the wind elementals there lifted the entire island into the Elemental Plane, meaning Zephyrus Isle probably isn't part of Azeroth anymore — it exists as a separate region of the universe, like Outland or the Shadowlands.

If true, that's a fascinating design choice: the Skyborn would begin their existence on a different plane from every other race.

🔍 The "Circled" Unfinished Zones: Blizzard's Long Game

At the BlizzCon Forever panel, Tim Jones laid out the guiding philosophy: "When we look at Azeroth, we see potential. Unfinished stories. Unexplored places. Regions players have been wondering about for decades."

Beyond the four launch zones, Blizzard has clearly flagged multiple unfinished areas for future use:

Area

Location

Notes

Northern EPL coast

Northern Eastern Kingdoms

Large flat terrain; no Ghostlands here

Hills south of Caer Darrow

South of Scholomance island

Long unfinished

South of Greymane Wall

Below Shadowfang Keep

Became Gilneas in Cataclysm

North of Stormwind

Central Eastern Kingdoms

The "Stormwind backyard"

Southern STV coast

Near Zul'Gurub

Another odd unfinished patch

South of Un'Goro

Southern Kalimdor

Became Uldum in retail

Western Stonetalon edge

Western Kalimdor

"Hiding in plain sight"

These areas have existed for twenty years, hidden behind hills and terrain. Now the plan is to finally use them — meaning future content drops, not just a one-time launch batch.

💰 What This Means for World of Warcraft Forever Gold

  1. New gold sources: Four new zones mean new quests, new mob drops, and new vendors — critical for building World of Warcraft Forever Gold in a version with no Token system.
  2. New profession materials: Each zone introduces fresh gathering nodes and drop materials. Riverglades and Shen'Dralas are the best starting points for most players.
  3. Smoother leveling: Classic's leveling curve has notorious dead spots. These new zones could fill those gaps and reduce forced grinding.

🎯 Final Thoughts

WoW Forever's map philosophy is refreshingly simple: turn twenty years of "gray space" into real adventure. Shen'Dralas continues Desolace's story, Riverglades fills the Eastern Kingdoms' biggest terrain gap, Mount Hyjal fulfills a long-held explorer's dream, and Zephyrus Isle gives the Skyborn their own narrative origin.

If you're diving into the beta, convert every quest reward and gathering node into early World of Warcraft Forever Gold. In a version with no shortcuts, an early economic edge outlasts any gear advantage.
