Path of Exile Guide: Rundown on Ascendancies in PoE

By Pen Slingers2022-10-28

Path of Exile is already quite a complex game with its versatility of options in the Passive Tree nodes and the staggering amount of DD and support gems. If you want to play a single Class, you'll have enough build permutations to last you for a very long time. Adding 2-3 Ascendancies options for your class, each adding new mechanics, powerful buffs, or new skills is more the merrier. And multiply all this by 7, the number of Classes; it is every dungeon crawler's wet dream that comes to life.

With so many great options, you are bound to make mistakes in making better choices. Still, you don't have to as, in this article, we have listed each class Ascendancy starting from least friendly to new players to the best in the making currency fast, where 19 is lowest or worst, and 1 at the end is the best or highest.

19 – Guardian

Guardian Ascendancy is a support class specialty that works perfectly with a group of people but is not for solo gameplay. Furthermore, its staple aura can benefit minions if you want to play a minion build, but for that, there are better options, such as Necromancer.

18 – Hierophant

In the previous leagues, Hierophant Ascendancy was nerfed mainly to the totem build, and you could no longer dish out more than one totem at a time. Even though the Arcane Surge nodes got buffed, they still weren't enough for this Ascendancy to shine. Players are better off playing Chieftain and Elementalist if they want to scratch the Totem or Spellcaster itch.

The Totems has recently seen some love from the Lake of Kalandra season, and with the support of gems, you could cast additional totems, but still, things will take time to settle to see if it is viable.

17 – Juggernaut

Juggernaut is meant to be the tank of your party that can absorb tons of damage and survives long fights while not doing much damage. But the variety of elements and enemy attacks makes it quite challenging to train your class for a build that mitigates all varieties of damage which doesn't translate well to bosses. It is challenging to survive boss mechanics such as Storms of Sirus, the memory game Maven plays, and almost every Oshabi attack.

Most players believe that Juggernaut Ascendancy was built for Hard Core as the league starter class until they have enough for other toons, but for Soft Core and skilled PoE players, it doesn't have much to offer.

16 – Berserker

He is probably one of the most scaling characters when dealing damage with time, as Berserker enhances damage the more rage he has. Their big DMG multipliers make them many player's favorites, but no one can deny facing more deaths than other classes.

While most players portray dodging attacks well enough to help the Berserker survive, there are many dungeons and bosses where a pure berserker won't stand a chance. Terrible for a starter class Ascendancy if you are playing HC.

15 – Gladiator

For every duelist fan, the bleed-inducing explosions, block capping up to 75%, insane DMG with Gratuitous Violence skill gem Gladiator is a perfect choice. But the issue is it relies heavily on perfect gear roles plus needing to add more def layers, which makes it fall short, and players will choose other Ascendancies for starting fast. Though if you spend time, the bleed blow builds are amazing.

14 – Pathfinder

Pathfinder is the best Ascendancy to choose if you love the game's flask mechanics, but this renders the Ascendancy a bit bland. Players often compensate for that with poison as provided along her nodes. Builds like Toxic Rain, Herald of Agony, and the Scourge Arrow are meant for this particular reason. Anything other than the poison requires too much of an investment.

13 – Ascendant

We have recently written Pro tips to utilize Scion Class which only has one Ascendancy, and you need to circumvent a lot of hoops to make her work. Receiving buffs every season, Ascendant is best for either a melee life leach-focused class or focusing on Cluster, and Timeless Jewels stacking, with aura stacking, are great options for Ascendant.

12 – Chieftain

There is a lot to be desired for Cheiftian Ascendancy as the Harvest season is over; it fades away from viability again. But if players are looking for survivability buffs that you can get from Cleansing Water and Tasilo nodes, you get an insane boost to DMG and ATK Speed. These are further enhanced with Ancestral Totems. A remarkable, fun Ascendancy for new players.

11 – Deadeye

Deadeye Ascendancy is more projectile focused and can benefit significantly from many scaling projectile damage-enhancing skill gems. You can also add Tailwind and other bleed nodes to your builds. We love the spawning mirages as Mirage Archers, among many of her outstanding skills. Her point on this list is her reliance on Evasion and Tailwind for survival.

10 – Raider

If you are looking for the fastest leveling Ascendancy in the game, Raider is your choice due to her Onslaught leveling path. She is the best softcore ascendancy to reach the end game due to her Frenzy Charge and Pushing buffs.

The only issues she has are relying on Evasion and Dodge attributes, which do for SC until the end game but are dangerous for HC players. A big no-no in HC for Red-tier maps and challenging bosses.

9 – Saboteur

Players who love playing with traps and mines as their playstyle cannot go wrong with Saboteur, but it falls short regarding versatility and restriction to Archetype. Nonetheless, when focused on traps, the class, and its Ascendancy is a fun build to play even in the end game, though a much slower boss killer.

8 – Champion

Champions are great for new players who would love to hit like a truck while don't worry about spending too much on defenses. Champions get a good start with Impale buffs and Fortify buffs for defenses. They are also good party members, as can Taunt gaining 35% increased passives from the Passives Tree. Don't scale well with great like other classes.

7 – Assassin

Assassins Ascendancy is still amazingly strong even after so many nerfs in the recent patches; their poison build is so OP that the game starts lagging while calculating DMG in the end game. It might take some time for new users to get used to it.

6 – Slayer

If you are the kind of gamer that loves the playstyle of Berserker but can't always worry about watching defenses, Slayer is their main. The Slayer has incredible strengths with Endurance and Frenzy charges to deal tons of damage while gaining defensive buffs. They also leach hp at total health without sacrificing their defenses.

5 – Inquisitor

One of the most potent Ascendancy in the game due to its hybrid attack/spell-casting playstyle from Sanctuary and Pious Path that you can choose for any build. Inquisitors also gain the Instrument of Seal after being attacked a few times, increasing casting speed. Fun Ascendancy for Spell Build lovers.

4 – Occultist

Occultist Ascendancy is known for its DoT skills and Chaos damage, which Void Beacon and Withering Presence massively enhance. Frigid Wake plus become fantastic support if built around Malediction. They can also transition into the Witch class's passive tree for Chaos Inoculation for immunity to Chaos.

3 – Elementalist

With the most recent revamp and buff, Elementalist players can choose from Fire, Cold and Lightening elements to buff their skills or choose a mix of the three. Their elemental damage with every attack hit tons of DMG, while the Golem build is also quite viable with any build for all players with varying experience in the game.

2 – Necromancer

The master of all Ascendancy. Minion build? Almost all nodes buff them. Need Support? They can become a hybrid support cum minion master. Necromancers even play melee class due to their Offerings, Corpse buffs, etc. The jewels add more diversity to their build.

1 – Trickster

Our best Ascendancy by numbers is the Trickster, as it is the most versatile Ascendancy because almost all builds can benefit from its exceptional skills and upgrades. If you are going for DoT, you must use Harness the Void and Patient Reaper nodes in the Passives Tree. Most nodes give the Trickster a good mix of offensive and defensive attributes making the game OP and so much fun.

Conclusion

We have ranked all the Ascendancy according to their viability in the early game, how easy they are to play and if they can survive on their own. There were a few Ascendancies fans more favored those because those Ascendancies can easily survive in the HC, while some were degraded for the same reason.

Each Ascendancy is linked with their official Path of Exile sight so you can check out their skills and passives to plan better ahead. If you want to learn more about these Ascendancies and which builds are best for each Ascendancy and Class, visit our PoE page for more information.
