WoW Forever Tank Changes: Paladin, Druid & Warrior

Tanking in WoW Forever is shaping up to be very different from classic Vanilla WoW. While it is still too early to determine which tank will ultimately become the strongest, all three tank classes—Paladin, Druid, and Warrior—are receiving significant changes that will affect their abilities, builds, gear choices, and overall play styles. Threat management is especially important in WoW Forever, meaning tanks will need to carefully balance offensive throughput with defensive utility when building their characters.

This guide, shared by Riyani on his YouTube channel, breaks down the current design of each tank, including major ability changes, talent options, and potential builds. Keep in mind that these details are based on an early version of the game, so abilities, talents, numbers, and scaling may change before the live release.

WoW Forever Tank Changes: Paladin, Druid & Warrior

Protection Paladin: The Most Flexible Tank

Protection Paladin currently looks like the most interesting tank because of its wide range of potential talent builds. Different builds could significantly change how the Paladin plays and what type of gear it prefers.

New and Changed Paladin Abilities

Seal of Fury is the new tanking seal. It deals a flat amount of damage with each melee swing while also providing a small absorb effect. When the seal is released through Judgment, it deals damage and taunts the target, effectively becoming the Paladin's new taunt. The unusual part of this design is that the Paladin's taunt is tied directly to the Judgment cooldown. This may require careful planning during encounters where frequent taunts are necessary. Both the damage and absorb provided by Seal of Fury are flat values and do not scale with weapon speed. As a result, Protection Paladins may prefer faster weapons because they can potentially increase damage output and mana regeneration.

Paladins also gain Holy Strike, which functions similarly to Crusader Strike but has a longer cooldown and lower weapon-damage scaling. It is expected to serve mainly as a low-value filler ability. Further down the Protection tree, Holy Strike gains an active-mitigation-like effect that reduces damage taken by 10%, with a potential uptime of around 60%.

Consecration is also being changed. Its full damage value applies only to the first four targeted enemies, while additional enemies receive significantly less damage. This means Protection Paladin should remain a strong AoE tank, but its overall AoE power is considerably lower than its Burning Crusade counterpart. The early showcase build demonstrated this difference, with enemies outside the initial four targets taking only a small amount of Consecration damage.

Blessing spells remain mutually exclusive, meaning casting another Blessing can overwrite an existing buff on the same party member. However, Blessings now last for one hour, reducing the need for constant rebuffing. Blessing of Kings is now baseline, while Blessing of Sanctuary has been removed. Instead of relying on a traditional Shield Wall-style ability, Protection Paladins can obtain a powerful defensive cooldown through their talent tree that provides a 100% HP shield on a four-minute cooldown.

Protection Paladin Talent Builds

The Protection talent tree has been heavily redesigned, with five completely new talents and many other talents functioning differently from their classic versions. This opens the door to several possible builds depending on the content and role. Potential approaches include:

  • A deep Protection build focused on the redesigned Holy Shield, with additional points in other trees for offensive and defensive utility.
  • A two-handed tanking build designed around increasing threat, similar in concept to Fury/Prot tanking in Classic.
  • A deep Holy build focused on extremely strong single-target snap threat through Holy Shock.
  • A hybrid Protection/Retribution build that takes Vengeance and the new talent that converts Intellect into Spell Power.

Because there are so many possibilities, it is unlikely that one Paladin build will be optimal for every situation. Dual specialization should therefore be particularly useful for players who want different setups for raids, dungeons, and other content.

The biggest concern with Protection Paladin currently is the Judgment-based taunt. Paladins already have a relatively limited rotational toolkit, so having to work around Judgment's cooldown when a taunt is needed could feel awkward. Overall, however, Protection Paladin looks promising and could become one of the most versatile tanks in WoW Forever.

Experimenting with different Protection Paladin builds can also mean spending more on gear, consumables, and other upgrades. If you want to prepare your character faster, MmoGah WoW Forever Gold provides a convenient way to get the currency you need for your next upgrade.

Feral Druid: Simple, Tough, and Reliable

Feral Druid appears to be in a solid position, although its itemization and build options are less complicated than those of Protection Paladin. Rather than offering a huge number of different play styles, the Druid's strengths revolve around high durability, three-target burst cleave, and strong sustained single-target threat.

New Druid Tank Abilities

Mangle and Lacerate are being added to the standard Feral rotation. These abilities resemble versions found in later expansions, although their scaling is different. Mangle's main difference is that it does not increase bleed damage and instead functions primarily as a direct-damage instant ability.

Frenzied Regeneration is also being changed. It now uses a percentage-based health modifier and can restore up to 100% of the Druid's health over its duration, making it an important defensive tool.

Feral abilities are receiving several additional changes as well. Barkskin no longer applies an attack-speed debuff and no longer costs mana. Since it is learned at level 44, its exact interactions and availability in Bear Form remain something to watch during testing. Also, consumables can now be used while in animal forms, while Windfury also works for Bears and Cats.

Berserk has been added with a three-minute cooldown and 15-second duration, allowing the Druid to repeatedly use Mangle against up to three targets during the effect.

Omen of Clarity is now part of the base toolkit.

Furor has also been adjusted so that it no longer supports power shifting in the same way as Classic, while new talents improve Rage generation and overall tanking performance.

Druid Tanking and Talent Builds

Druids should generate significantly more Rage through the new Natural Reaction talent. Combined with additional Rage generation and new Swipe damage modifiers, dungeon tanking should feel considerably smoother than it does in Classic.

The talent system appears to provide less flexibility than Protection Paladin, with the main choice being how heavily a player wants to specialize in Bear tanking or retain the ability to switch into Cat Form. A dedicated Bear build could invest into the Balance tree for additional Hit Chance and into Restoration for 5% damage. Players who want a more hybrid-oriented setup could instead invest deeper into Feral to pick up talents such as the new King of the Jungle.

Overall, Feral Druid looks like a relatively straightforward tank that has been significantly improved compared with its Classic version. Its combination of toughness, sustained threat, and three-target cleave could make it particularly effective in dungeon content.

Protection Warrior: The Classic Tank Gets Modernized

Warrior has traditionally been considered the dominant tank in Vanilla WoW, but its position in WoW Forever is not guaranteed. The biggest change is that the game strongly encourages Warriors to use a one-handed weapon and shield while tanking. Many threat-related effects in the Protection tree only function when a shield is equipped.

Warrior Ability Changes

Rage generation has been significantly improved, particularly at lower levels. When several enemies are attacking the Warrior, maintaining enough Rage to use abilities such as Cleave should be much easier.

Thunder Clap can now be used in Defensive Stance and reduces enemy attack speed by 20%. This provides considerable offensive and defensive utility, especially in dungeon situations where Warriors are dealing with multiple enemies.

Victory Rush is now part of the Warrior's baseline toolkit. When used within 20 seconds after killing an enemy, it restores 10% health, with a 30-second cooldown.

Charge can also be used in Defensive Stance. However, this does not allow Warriors to Charge while already in combat. Players will still need to use stance swapping and Intercept when engaging enemies during combat.

Tactical Mastery has also become part of the base toolkit, although it provides less Rage than its Classic version unless players invest in the improved Tactical Mastery talents.

Protection Warrior Talent Builds

Warrior has received fewer fundamental changes than the other tanks, which is understandable given that it was already one of the most commonly played tanking classes. However, there is still room for experimentation.

The most conventional build is likely to go deep into Protection while spending the remaining points in either Arms or Fury. An Arms-focused setup could pick up Deep Wounds and Impale, while a Fury-oriented build could invest in Enrage for additional offensive potential.

There is also a possibility for a one-handed Fury tank build. Such a setup could invest heavily in Fury while still picking up important shield-based threat and Rage-generation talents from Protection.

Another potential option is a dungeon-focused build that takes Sweeping Strikes instead of Shield Slam. With more opportunities to use Cleave, this could provide additional damage and threat in multi-target situations.

However, the effectiveness of these alternative builds will depend heavily on how incoming damage, Rage generation, and threat values ultimately work in the live game.

Which Tank Will Be the Best in WoW Forever?

It is too early to name a definitive best tank for WoW Forever. Each class currently appears to have a distinct identity:

Protection Paladin offers the greatest build flexibility and potentially excellent AoE and single-target threat. Its redesigned talent tree could support several specialized builds, although tying taunt to Judgment may be a significant drawback.

Feral Druid focuses on durability, sustained single-target threat, and strong three-target cleave. It appears to be the simplest tank to build and play, while still offering meaningful talent customization.

Protection Warrior remains the most familiar option for Classic players. Its core gameplay has not changed dramatically, but improved Rage generation, Defensive Stance abilities, and redesigned talents could make the class smoother and more flexible.

The final balance will depend on factors such as threat scaling, defensive requirements, damage profiles, and the exact numbers that make it to the live version.
