Path of Exile 2’s Patch 0.5, titled Return of the Ancients, will launch on May 29th, and marks the most transformative update the game has received before its full 1.0 release. This patch introduces sweeping improvements to crafting, endgame progression, league mechanics, and character customization. It also reimagines several classic systems from PoE 1, bringing them forward with modern design philosophy. Below is a complete breakdown of everything revealed for Patch 0.5.

1. New Rune League

Empower dead monsters around you to craft PoE 2 currency and items.

Runic Ward added to all items, including uniques

  • Provides an additional defensive layer that can save your life when you would otherwise die.
  • Some skills now spend Runic Ward instead of mana.
    • These skills have no attribute or weapon requirements.
    • This makes them usable by all classes.
  • All uniques can be runeforged, altering their power.
    • Works for upgrading low‑level uniques or modifying powerful endgame ones.

100 new runes and currencies

  • Expands crafting depth.
  • Alloys introduce new affixes that can be applied to gear.

Explore the Ocean

  • Expeditions and Grand Expeditions.
  • New bosses.

2. New Endgame

  • New Endgame System with fixed points of interest, objectives, and quests.
  • Disarm ancient weapons to progress.
  • Special maps with new mechanics:
    • Every rare monster contains an essence.
    • Strongboxes appear everywhere.

3. New Passive Tree

  • New Passive Tree with more impactful choices.
    • Rogue Exiles flee to adjacent maps with upgraded gear.
    • You can now obtain the entire tree.
      • This gives developers more freedom to create new nodes.
      • Some node selections are still required.

4. Pinnacle Bosses

  • Arbiter of Ash now has a fixed fight pattern initially.
    • He is no longer the pinnacle boss—he now resides at the center of the fortress.

5. Atlas Tree Ascendancies

  • Atlas Ascendancies gained by finding masters and completing quests.
  • Each ascendancy typically has a strong upside paired with a downside.

6. Updated Old Mechanics

Delirium

  • New Atlas Tree.
  • A bar now shows how deep you are into Delirium.
  • Objectives and boss locations are displayed.
  • Emotions can now add crafted mods to jewels.
    • Example: Critical Strike Chance or Movement Speed.
  • Grand Mirrors eventually appear and spread fog.
    • Run maps inside the fog to fight the pinnacle boss.
    • Afterward, Grand Mirrors spawn again for a harder version with new loot.

Breach

  • Genesis Tree restored.
  • Kill Marshalls to gain Womgifts for crafting.
  • Tree expanded significantly—crafting depth far exceeds PoE 1.
  • Eventually fight the Pinnacle Boss Xesht to spread breaches across the Atlas.
  • Major Atlas Tree update.

Ritual

  • All items in the tribute window are now uniques or valuables.
    • Solves a major issue for casual players.
  • Rituals now include map bosses in the final ritual and then move to another map.
  • Choosing different ritual paths grants different rewards.
    • Difficulty increases each map, up to 5×.
    • You must kill all 5 map bosses in the final map.
  • Completing the sequence lets you fight the King of the Mists to unlock the mechanic elsewhere.

Vaal Temple Core

  • No confirmed changes yet.

Conclusion

Patch 0.5 sets the stage for Path of Exile 2’s full release by modernizing core systems, expanding build diversity, and enriching the endgame with new progression layers. With its ambitious reworks, new league mechanics, and a stronger onboarding experience, Return of the Ancients feels like the true beginning of PoE 2’s identity. The November 1.0 launch is shaping up to be even more impactful, but Patch 0.5 already delivers a massive leap forward for both veterans and new exiles.
