OSRS: A Beginner’s Slayer Guide

By Michel Z2019-02-11

Slayer is one of the most profitable skills in RuneScape which earns you a good amount of RS07 gold. This is a beginner’s Slayer guide that tells you all about Slayer points, the Slayer helm, Slayer tips and tricks, the new Hydra Slayer boss, and the new Slayer master Konar.

Please click YouTuber Link'sOcarina’s video for more details, and all the content of this article is quoted from his video.

Slayer involves you visiting a Slayer master who will assign you a task to kill certain monsters based on your Combat level. For example, the early Slayer masters will assign the task of killing 12 cows. So after you’ve spoken to the masters, you go and kill 12 cows, and you’ll get some Slayer XP every time you kill one of those cows. Once you’ve killed all 12, you go back to that Slayer master, then he (her) will give you another task.

Slayer allows you to attack monsters you otherwise wouldn’t be able to damage without having the appropriate Slayer level. For example, the Hydra boss killing requires level 95 Slayer, but these monsters drop things that are over 1M RuneScape gold each, and since not everyone has the required Slayer level, these monsters drop good items that are worth a lot of OSRS gold. Essentially, you will be attacking really boring and slow creatures to start with, but as you gain those Slayer levels, you’ll start making bank because the monsters you’ll unlock later are going to drop very good items.

There are 8 different Slayer masters. As your combat level rises, you’ll be able to access higher level Slayer masters. The reason you’ll want to unlock better Slayer masters is they give better tasks which means more money, and there’s also a reward point system which we will talk about later in this guide.

Turael or Krystilia

When you start off Slayer, you have 2 options. You can either go with Turael or Krystilia. Krystilia is a Wilderness only Slayer, and every single one of your tasks are going to be performed in the Wilderness where other players can kill you.

Turael is the best Slayer master to start with. You can find him in a small house south of the general store in Burthorpe. The easiest way to get to Burthorpe is using a Games necklace which you can buy from the Grand Exchange for 1,000 OSRS gold. Once you’ve bought your games necklace, you just right click on it, click Rub, and choose Burthorpe, then it will take you right to where you need to be.

The goal with this Slayer master is to quickly do 5 tasks with him and then get to Combat level 20.

Mazchna (Combat Level 20)

The next Slayer master is Mazchna who is in Canifis, which means you’ll have to do the Priest in Peril quest, but that’s a simple quest. Mazchna requires 20 Combat level, and he is the first Slayer master to give you reward points.

At this Slayer level, you shouldn’t be focusing on points at all, they’re just a little bonus, and you should be focusing on getting your Slayer XP.

Reward points allow you to do several different things. One of the main things they allow you to do is to block or skip tasks you don’t want to do.

As you can see in the table above, there is a points per 10th, 50th, 100th, 250th, 1,000th tasks. Every time you get to one of these milestones, you get a huge reward point bonus, and without being able to skip tasks, it would be very difficult and time-consuming to get to these milestones.

There is also a reward point shop where you can spend all the points you’ve earned. Below are a few of the best ones you can unlock.

Slayer Helm

You can unlock the Slayer Helm which will give you an accuracy and damage boost when attacking the monster you’ve been assigned.

Slayer Ring

You can unlock a Slayer ring which will take you to all of the main places where you can kill all of your monsters, so you don’t need to worry about running around anymore.

Extend Tasks

You can extend tasks that you really like or make you a lot of rsgp so that you can continue to make more rsgp while getting XP.

Herb Sack

You can unlock things like Herb sack which will hold 420 Herbs.

Rune Pouch

The Rune pouch will hold up to 16,000 of three types of runes.

Skip or Block Tasks

If you skip a task, you may be assigned that target again in future; If you block a task, you will never have to do it ever again, so you can block those tasks that you really hate.

Vannaka (Combat Level 40)

At Combat level 40, you can start slaying with Vannaka. He is located in the Edgeville dungeon. He he is a great Slayer master for mid-tier players, and he will double the number of points you’re given per task to 4 rather than 2 previously. He’ll give very good tasks, and you’ll get decent points from him as well. Because his tasks are quite easy and small, it won’t take you too long to rack up a few points.

Now, you are getting to around level 50, 60, 70 through doing Vannaka. I would recommend getting yourself a Dwarf Cannon. To use a cannon, you need to complete the Dwarf Cannon quest first.

A cannon will shoot cannonballs at the monsters you are attacking for your Slayer task. This will speed tasks up massively, but it’s a little expensive. The cannon itself will cost you 750K-800K 07 gold. The price of cannonballs fluctuates all the time, but they’re currently worth around 200 gp each. If you have a little extra OSRS gold, I would definitely recommend using a cannon since it gives you more XP per hour and allows you to get tasks out the way.

Chaeldar (Combat Level 70)

At Combat level 70, you’ll be able to use Chaeldar. Chaeldar has a requirement of Lost City, but Lost City is a fundamental quest, and you’ll want to get it done especially if you are Combat level 70.

Chaeldar is located in Zanaris, and you can access Zanaris by entering the shed in the Lumbridge Swamp, or if you’ve done the Fare Tale part 1 and started part 2, you can use any of the Fairy rings to go straight to Zanaris.

Nieve (Combat Level 85)

At Combat level 85, you can use Nieve, or you can use Steve if you’ve completed the Monkey Madness II quest.

Nieve is located in the Tree Gnome Stronghold. The easiest way of getting here is to use the Spirit tree by the Grand Exchange.

Duradel (Combat Level 100)

At Combat level 100, you can use Duradel who is located in the Shilo Village which requires the Shilo Village quest completed to access. To receive Slayer tasks from Duradel, you also need to have a Slayer level of 50.

Duradel is also the NPC from whom you can buy the Slayer Cape once you get to level 99 Slayer. Duradel, Nieve, and Steve are all used by high-level accounts. These three NPCs or Slayer masters are more personal preference rather than one of them being correct.

Konar (Combat Level 75)

Konar is a new OSRS Slayer master who is located on Mount Karuulm. Unlike the other Slayer masters, she will assign you a task, but you’ll also have to kill that task in a certain area. She requires 75 Combat level to access.

Krystilia

Krystilia is located in Edgeville, and all of her tasks are performed in the Wilderness. She has no minimum Combat or Slayer level requirements. The reason people use Krystilia is that they can get Mysterious emblems which are worth quite a lot of Old School RuneScape gold. Mysterious emblems are dropped at a different rate depending on what you are killing, but it is worth over 120K gp each, so it means you can make a bit of extra gp while doing Slayer.

Link'sOcarina has the Spiritual creatures, steal dragons and Iron dragons on his Block list.

He also recommends using Catacombs whenever possible. Catacombs are located in the center of Kourend. The reason why he recommends using Catacombs is that you can get dark totems and ancient shards which are very helpful. Dark totem allows you to attack the Skotizo boss which drops really good items along with pets and Slayer helm recolors. Ancient shards can be used with a darklight to create an arclight which is useful against demons.

For tasks you want to speed up, you can use the Expeditious bracelet which you can buy from the GE, and this provides a 25% chance for the kill to count as two kills towards your Slayer task. If you’d like to extend a task that is making you a lot of RuneScape gold, you can use the Bracelet of slaughter which provides a 25% chance for a Slayer assignment kill to not count as a kill towards it, and you’ll still receive the Slayer XP for the kill though.
