Skill Points Guide of the Elder Scrolls Online

By Delia Woolf2016-12-27

In Elder Scrolls Online, gaining skill points is one of the primary ways for making your character stronger. Skill points are a limited resource in Elder Scrolls Online. You’ll naturally cumulate skill points as you advance in game, but you can also go out of your way to specifically hunt for skill points. Each active ability requires 2 skill points to fully unlock (one skill point to unlock and one to morph), while passive skills may require anywhere from 1-3 skill points to fully unlock. Given that players can access abilities from three skill trees for their class, six skill trees for weapons, and many other extraneous skill trees for abilities and passives, players can easily go through a hundred skill points and still want more. Skill points are needed for just about everything in ESO. You use skill points to unlock passive crafting skills, passive and active combat skills and their morphs. That’s why grabbing all the skill points you can possibly get will be very important for character progression.

How many skill points in ESO

There are 366 skill points to be acquired to date. The most obvious of course, Skyshards and the main storyline. Something that many of us forget are the subtle ways to gain skill points, such as the faction storyline quests. There are 3 skill points to be gained in each zone from these quests, and they are not to be forgotten while advancing your character.

The number of skill points is only going to get bigger and bigger in ESO with new content updates and zones. At the same time you’ll gain access to a greater variety of skills, so it all balances out in the end.

~300 Skill points is not enough to master everything. Crafting, for example, eats a lot of skill points on its own. Fully mastering Alchemy requires you to use 19 skill points, whilst each Smith profession (Blacksmithing, Clothing and Woodworking) take 23 skill points to master. It’s possible to master every crafting profession, but that does not leave you with many extra skill points. Your number one focus should probably be having a healthy selection of combat skills and passives, since ESO is all about combat, after all.

Once you have completed your own alliance zones, you can expect to have over 100 skill points depending on how many skyshards you’ve found and how much time you’ve spent in Cyrodiil.

How to Earn Skill Points

While you can reset your skill points, there are so many great skills and crafts in ESO that players will always be looking for more skill points. Fortunately, there are options in the game that can help you earn a virtually unlimited supply of skill points.

Leveling Up

Each time you level up, you gain 1 Attribute point and 1 Skill Point. With the release of Dark Brotherhood, you will now gain an extra attribute and stat point every 5 levels, and two extra points every 10 levels. In addition to gaining skill points for advancing in character level, you are awarded a skill point for each alliance rank you earn in Cyrodiil. Similar to leveling up, you gain these upon ranking up.

Questing & Content

So far during my ESO journey, I have earned by far the most skill points from questing and completing in-game content. It seems like at the end of every major quest-line, you earn a skill point. I also seemed to earn skill points by increasing my PvP rank. The more main story, world, and guild quests you complete and the more PvP you participate in, the more skill points you earn.

This is one really great aspect of Zygor’s ESO leveling guide – since it is questing based, you get a lot of skill points just by following along.

How to Reset Skill Points

You can reset your skill points in ESO, as well as your attributes. This is done at a shrine which can be found in the second major alliance zone.

You’ll see three shrines; one of them is a shrine to Mara, which is required for the Ritual of Mara. The other two shrines let you reset your skills and attributes.

Respeccing in ESO is not free. Using the shrine requires you to give a donation or a “generous contribution” in gold. How much gold resetting your skills costs, depends on how many skill points you have. In the 0.181 build this cost is 100 gold per skill point – the more skill points you have, the more you have to pay to respec.

If you had 300 skill points, the respec cost would be 30k gold, which is a LOT of gold.

The skill reset shrine, attribute reset shrine and shrine to Mara are all right next to each other and they are also marked on the map. As long as you’re in the correct city, they’re very hard to miss!

Skyshards

Skyshards are hidden items that exist around the game world in static spots. Each time you find one, you can interact with it to absorb it. Skyshards are a one-time use – they do not respawn. Every time you absorb three Skyshards, you get a bonus skill point.

In truth, while Skyshards may elude you if you do not know where to look, all you need is to keep your eyes open as you complete quests and you will run into a lot of them. There are two things that make finding Skyshards really easy:

A huge beam of light radiates towards the sky from each skyshard. This makes them extremely easy to spot from a distance – just make sure you look up often.

Hints to finding each skyshard can be found in your achievements log. Open up the quest journal and click on the achievements tab in the top right and look for skyshards. You will find a hint to finding every skyshard in every zone in that journal.

There are well over a hundred skyshards in ESO – more than enough to grant the explorer many skill points.

Dungeons

Upon your first completion of the main quest in each normal difficulty group dungeon, you will be awarded a skill point. The same occurs with veteran group dungeons.

There is also a public dungeon in each zone. In each of these dungeons there is a specific boss that gives you a skill point upon the death of that boss. Some of us can solo these, while others may need a couple friends. One specific example is the public dungeon in the Alik’r Desert. You’ll need at least two people to obtain the group boss skill point here. Either way, be sure not to miss these bosses!

By participating in quests, leveling up, and finding skyshards, you can unlock hundreds of skill points in ESO.

ESO is more and more interesting along with the update 12 which brings players together in One Tamriel now.
